Since it first appeared on Netflix in September 2020, the Enola Holmes series has become one of the platform’s most successful original films. Starring Millie Bobby Brown as the clever younger sister of Sherlock Holmes (played by Henry Cavill), the first two movies were huge hits, with the second film alone racking up 64 million viewing hours in its first weekend. Critics have also praised the films. Now, a third movie is on the way, bringing back the main cast and promising a fresh take on the story, as shown in the new trailer.
The new trailer starts with a thrilling scene: Enola, wearing a wedding dress, is fighting for her life in a speeding chariot while being chased across rough land by a masked figure on horseback. She then explains how she ended up in this dangerous situation. We see flashbacks of Enola’s happy life with Tewkesbury, including his proposal. Their wedding needs to be in Malta, following a family tradition, so the whole family travels there. The trailer shows Enola is torn – she loves Tewkesbury, but worries about losing her independence and the career she’s worked hard to establish. The chase scene returns, revealing the masked rider is actually Watson, who has rushed to Malta with urgent news: Sherlock has been kidnapped.
Enola Holmes 3 Takes the Franchise to Bold New Territory With a Change of Setting and Dual Storylines
The third Enola Holmes movie takes a big leap from the gloomy, industrial setting of Victorian England to the bright, sunny island of Malta. The first two films used the rain-soaked landscapes to highlight the strict rules Enola was always rebelling against. This new location promises a visually different look and a whole new set of problems for her to solve. Adding to the change, Philip Barantini, an Emmy-winning director, is taking over as director, working with returning writer Jack Thorne. This combination suggests the filmmakers are aiming to bring a fresh approach to the series.

I really loved how Enola Holmes 3 wasn’t just visually stunning, but also how much the characters grew! It was so interesting to see Enola grappling with getting married – it really hit at the heart of what the movies are about, making her choose between love and being her own person. And flipping the script with Sherlock getting kidnapped? Genius! It not only changed their usual brother-sister dynamic, but having her solve a mystery on her wedding day perfectly mirrored what she was feeling inside. It was great to see Enola finally step out of Sherlock’s shadow and really take the lead, especially since he was the one needing rescuing this time. It felt like a natural progression for her character.
Enola Holmes 3 is scheduled to be released globally on Netflix on July 1st.
