Buffy the Vampire Slayer started as a show about a teenage girl named Buffy Summers, destined to fight vampires in her hometown of Sunnydale. But it quickly grew beyond that, introducing a whole cast of characters who helped her battle evil – from her friends, known as the Scooby Gang, to her mentor, Giles, and even vampires like Angel and Spike who fought on her side. While the show eventually revealed a network of future vampire slayers, around ten key heroes consistently stepped up to face the terrifying demons emerging from the Hellmouth.
Here is a look at the 10 main Buffy the Vampire Slayer heroes in the TV series, ranked by power.
10) Xander Harris

Xander Harris is arguably the most ordinary hero in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but his difficult past fueled his unwavering loyalty and courage. Unlike the other heroes, Xander has no supernatural abilities. Instead, his greatest moment isn’t a physical battle, but a scene in the Season 6 finale, “Grave” (2002). He bravely approached the incredibly powerful Dark Willow, unarmed, and talked her down from the brink by sharing a simple childhood memory. He selflessly endured magical attacks until she calmed down, ultimately saving the world. Even after losing an eye in the final season, Xander never stopped fighting for what was right.
9) Jenny Calendar

Jenny Calendar first appears in Season 1 as the computer science teacher at Sunnydale High, and she develops a romantic relationship with Giles. However, she was keeping a secret life from everyone. A techno-pagan, she combined her knowledge of ancient magic with technology, using computers to preserve old texts and track demons. She was also Janna of the Kalderash, a member of a Romani clan who originally cursed Angelus with a soul. She was sent to Sunnydale to watch over the curse and try to keep Angel and Buffy from getting together. When Angel loses his soul and becomes Angelus again, he tragically murders Jenny. Fortunately, she had already developed a spell that Willow later uses to restore his soul and end his reign of terror.
8) Anya

Anya Jenkins first appeared in the Season 3 episode “The Wish” (1998) as Anyanka, a demon who specialized in helping women get revenge. She was transformed into a human teenager when Giles destroyed her source of power, though she retained much of her strength. After Xander left her at the wedding, Anya unleashed a powerful demon on a fraternity as an act of rage. Throughout the series, Anya’s powers fluctuated and were taken away from her on multiple occasions before her death in the final episode.
7) Rupert Giles

Rupert Giles initially appeared as a simple librarian and mentor to Buffy Summers, guiding her as the Chosen One. But he was much more than that – a knowledgeable expert in the occult and a magic user himself. His past as the dangerous “Ripper” in 1970s London involved dark magic and a demon named Eyghon, experiences that left him with a tattoo and a deep understanding of black magic he actively tries to suppress. Later, in Season 6, he used white magic to help Willow reconnect with her better self. While Giles does have magical abilities, they are often limited and depend on the situation.
6) Kendra Young

Throughout the TV series, Buffy Summers died several times, and each time, a new Slayer was chosen to take her place. Kendra Young was one of these replacements, first appearing in Season 2 after Buffy briefly died at the end of Season 1. Unlike Buffy, Kendra wasn’t raised with a normal family; she was given up as a child and trained rigorously to become a Slayer. While she had the same abilities as Buffy, Kendra was more focused on duty and lacked a social life. Unfortunately, Drusilla killed Kendra after just three episodes, which led to Faith becoming the next Slayer.
5) Faith Lehane

Faith is a fan-favorite character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She was the third Slayer introduced in the series and is known for her rebellious personality. This attitude, a stark contrast to Buffy’s, initially made her a villain, but she later found redemption in the series Angel and ultimately fought alongside Buffy in the final season. Faith possesses the same abilities as Buffy, with a slightly higher pain tolerance and comparable strength. Despite this, Buffy defeated and nearly killed her in the episode “Graduation Day, Part One.” Later, Faith played a key role in training the Potential Slayers to fight the Turok-Han at the Hellmouth and lived to tell the tale.
4) Spike

Spike first appeared as a villain in Season 2, along with his partner Drusilla. He was originally intended to be a one-time character, but he became so popular with viewers that the network asked Joss Whedon to keep him on the show. This eventually led to Spike regaining his soul and later becoming a main character on the series Angel after Buffy concluded. As a vampire who’s lived for a very long time—longer than almost any other in the show—Spike continually increased his powers. He even sacrificed himself to save Buffy in the Buffy finale, but was powerful enough to return and fight in the final battle on Angel.
3) Angel

Angel is the strongest vampire in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He first appeared in Season 1, acting as Buffy’s protector—unique among vampires for possessing a soul. He fought alongside her, but briefly became a dangerous enemy in Season 2 after finding happiness and reverting to his evil persona, Angelus. He tragically killed Jenny Calendar and nearly killed Buffy, but regained his soul long enough for her to defeat him and save the world. Angel later returned from death and, after Season 3, starred in his own show, where he appeared even more powerful.
2) Buffy Summers

Buffy Summers, the central character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was destined to protect the world from darkness. She faced death multiple times, but always returned stronger. After Buffy, two other Slayers appeared, but she proved more powerful than both, surviving Kendra and nearly defeating Faith. She overcame seemingly unbeatable foes like the demon Adam, and famously became the first on the show to defeat a god, destroying Glorificus and forcing her back into her human form with a troll hammer. Buffy has defeated more incredibly powerful villains than almost anyone, but there was still one opponent she couldn’t win against.
1) Willow Rosenberg

Willow Rosenberg is widely considered the most powerful witch in the history of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While she spent the early seasons developing her magical skills, she became an incredibly strong asset to the team. After the tragic death of her girlfriend, Tara, at the hands of Warren Mears, Willow briefly succumbed to dark magic, seeking revenge. She became so powerful and unstable that she threatened to destroy the world, but was ultimately saved by Giles’s use of white magic and Xander’s reminder of their friendship. Even after this crisis, Willow remained the most magically gifted character in the series. Both Giles and Anya acknowledged that Buffy wouldn’t have been able to defeat her at her peak, solidifying Willow’s place as the strongest hero ever seen on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
