Christian Bale is a highly respected actor known for consistently delivering well-received films. However, his most recent science fiction movie didn’t quite live up to expectations.
I was so excited to hear that The Bride! is now available on streaming! Honestly, it didn’t do great in theaters when it came out on March 6th, but it quickly turned things around. Within just one day, it shot to the top spot as the number one movie on HBO Max – that’s awesome!
I’m so thrilled! That new sci-fi movie absolutely crushed it at the box office, hitting number one in 23 countries on May 23rd and another 22 territories the next day. It’s amazing to see it take the top spot here in the U.S., finally ending the run of Gerard Butler’s Greenland 2: Migration. It really deserves all the success it’s getting!
What Happens in The Bride?
Hollywood has long been fascinated by the story of Frankenstein. Following the critical and award-winning success of Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 Frankenstein film, Maggie Gyllenhaal found inspiration in the classic 1935 movie Bride of Frankenstein, which itself was based on Mary Shelley’s original 1818 novel, Frankenstein.
The Bride! tells the story of Frankenstein’s monster, nicknamed Frank, who asks his creator, Dr. Cornelia Euphronius, to build him a companion. He selects a woman with a dark past, Ida, and the doctor successfully brings her back to life. Unfortunately, the process causes Ida to lose her memories, which Frank cleverly uses to convince her she is meant to be his wife. But their relationship doesn’t unfold as he expects.
Maggie Gyllenhaal not only directed and wrote the film, but also produced it with Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren. The film stars Christian Bale as Frank, a troubled character, and Jessie Buckley, who recently won an Oscar, as The Bride, a woman brought back to life.
The film featured a strong cast including Peter Sarsgaard as detective Jake Wiles, Annette Bening as Dr. Cornelia Euphronious, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Ronnie Reed. Penélope Cruz, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, and Matthew Maher also appeared in the movie.
The Bride! Was a Commercial Flop
The sci-fi film received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 57% rating based on 325 reviews. Many critics found it to be wildly creative but also messy and unfocused, comparing it to a chaotic science experiment that tries to do too much.
I really enjoyed it, and it seems like most people did too – it got a 70% approval rating! I heard some folks thought it was a little slow, but honestly, I found it super entertaining, and the actors were all fantastic. It really kept me hooked!
Even though audiences generally liked The Bride!, it was a major financial failure in 2026. Costing between $80 and $90 million to make, the movie only earned $24 million at the box office. When you factor in the $65 million spent on marketing, the film lost around $90 million overall. Movies typically need to earn 2.5 times their production cost to cover expenses, and The Bride! fell far short of that.
However, The Bride! can now be revived as a streaming hit on HBO Max.
