As a big fan of ‘Industry,’ I was really intrigued to hear Marisa Abela talk about where she sees her character going. It’s wild to think about how far she’s fallen in the latest season – some of her choices were seriously shocking! I’m so curious to see what happens next and what she hopes for her character’s arc.
Yasmin Kara-Hanani, portrayed by Abela, began her career as a rising star trader at the investment bank Pierpoint & Co. However, she has since abandoned any pretense of operating within the law and turned to more dangerous and illicit activities.
Honestly, the last we saw of her at the end of season four was really disturbing. She’d gotten involved in arranging meetings – basically pimping – between incredibly rich, and often extremist, men and young women. It was horrifying because some of those women were even minors. It left me completely shocked and unsettled.
The story felt disturbingly realistic, mirroring the extensive news coverage of the Epstein files and the revelations about the powerful people connected to him. These files detailed the crimes of the convicted sex offender and his network.
With the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Industry on the horizon, Myha’la Herrold spoke with Deadline about the show’s realistic and often harsh storylines.
It’s strange, but when we were filming, the Epstein scandal hadn’t really become widely known yet. But by the time the show was released, it was all over the news.

Abela explained that it was really tough to discuss something so undeniably awful. She’d spent a lot of time trying to understand Yasmin’s motives, and realizing it was all connected to a much larger, sinister plan made it even harder.
The celebrity then compared Yasmin to Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of helping Jeffrey Epstein commit crimes.
It feels very unusual and unexpected for a woman to behave this way. Society often expects women to adhere to stricter moral codes, making it difficult to comprehend how someone could reach a point where this behavior seems possible.
Abela believes Yasmin will escape her current situation more quickly than the people who faced it in the original story, because Yasmin doesn’t want to be there. Abela is also sure Yasmin recognizes that what she’s doing is wrong.
The actress, who previously starred in the films Back to Black and Black Bag, expressed hope that her character, Yasmin, will find some resolution in the show’s final episodes, though she acknowledges it will be difficult for the writers to achieve.
Mickey and Konrad, the creators, seem to prefer building on their ideas and thoughtfully developing them, instead of ignoring or dismissing anything they’ve created, perhaps because they enjoy a good creative challenge.
I hope they’ll approach the problem thoughtfully and indirectly, instead of confronting it directly.
