It’s An Exciting New Era For Brandon Sanderson Fans

It’s a fantastic time to be a fan of Brandon Sanderson! His incredibly popular stories – he’s sold over 50 million books worldwide and landed on the New York Times bestseller list more than a dozen times – are finally being adapted for the screen. With over 70 published books, Sanderson has firmly established himself as a leading fantasy author.

Brandon Sanderson is working with Apple TV+ on adaptations of his popular novels, starting with Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. Apple TV+ is known for producing fewer, but very high-quality shows. Importantly, they haven’t just acquired the rights to those two series—they now own the rights to all of Sanderson’s Cosmere books, meaning we could see even more adaptations in the future. Separately, Tomorrow Studios, the company behind Netflix’s live-action One Piece, has also acquired the rights to Sanderson’s young adult sci-fi novel, Skyward.

Good news for Brandon Sanderson fans! It seems we’re entering a promising period for adaptations of his work, with the potential for high-quality shows and movies that live up to the books. Unlike the Wheel of Time series on Prime Video—where Sanderson felt his contributions weren’t valued—these new projects will have his significant involvement, or even be fully guided by him, according to the author himself (as reported by Collider). There are several exciting adaptations in the works.

Brandon Sanderson Adaptations Will Be A Big Boost For The Fantasy & Sci-Fi Genres

Given Brandon Sanderson’s huge popularity in fantasy and science fiction, any adaptations of his work are likely to draw a large audience. This is especially true because these aren’t obscure titles; fans have been specifically requesting adaptations of Mistborn and Skyward for years. Unlike adaptations of books like Rithmatist, The Reckoners, or Warbreaker, which might not have generated as much excitement, I’m confident viewers will be eager to watch all three upcoming Sanderson adaptations. I’ve seen firsthand how dedicated the Cosmere and Skyward fanbases are, and I expect that passion to translate into strong viewership.

If these TV shows and movies are successful, they’ll likely draw more viewers to other science fiction and fantasy programs, potentially giving overlooked shows a new chance. The adaptations of Brandon Sanderson’s books could also inspire streaming services and production companies to create more shows and movies based on books. There’s a wealth of fantastic fantasy and sci-fi novels that would make great adaptations, and fans will have plenty more Brandon Sanderson books to enjoy after these initial releases. Ultimately, as long as these shows are well-received, they’ll be good for both the science fiction and fantasy genres.

Brandon Sanderson’s Involvement In The Upcoming Adaptations Are A Great Sign

The upcoming adaptations of Brandon Sanderson’s books could only hurt the sci-fi and fantasy genres if they’re poorly made. Bad adaptations might discourage streaming services from investing in expensive projects like those based on Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive, and Skyward. But a failure seems unlikely, as Sanderson has a unique deal with Apple TV. He has full creative control over the Cosmere universe, ensuring the adaptations stay true to his vision.

He’s currently working on the script for Mistborn, a project he wanted to do even before the deal with Apple TV. Brandon Sanderson has always been very careful about choosing which stories to adapt, and at the 2025 Celsius 232 festival (according to Dragonsteel), he shared that his ideal project was a Mistborn movie. He’s never been willing to sacrifice his creative vision, and now, thankfully, he doesn’t have to.

I was so excited to hear Brandon Sanderson announce on his YouTube channel that the Mistborn script is nearly finished! He also shared that he’s planning to tackle the script for The Stormlight Archive next, and he’s going to be a co-showrunner on that project. What I really loved hearing is that he intends to write a significant portion of the Stormlight Archive script himself – he simply wants to, and his current agreements fully allow him to do so. It’s fantastic that he’s prioritizing being directly involved in bringing his worlds to life!

As of now, it’s unclear exactly how much creative control Brandon Sanderson will have over the Skyward TV adaptation. However, he shared with Deadline that working with Tomorrow Studios to bring the story to television is a long-held dream, suggesting significant involvement. The announcement also confirmed he will at least be writing the storyline.

With three exciting projects underway and Brandon Sanderson actively involved, now is a fantastic time to be a fan of his work. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these adaptations come to life!
