An online role-playing game set in the world of The Lord of the Rings seems like a guaranteed hit. While others have attempted this before and ultimately failed, J.R.R. Tolkien’s world is perfectly suited for a massive multiplayer online game. However, past attempts haven’t been successful enough to sustain the ongoing costs of a game like this.
Amazon Games recently cancelled its long-in-development Lord of the Rings MMO. Though disappointing for the team who worked on it, it’s likely a good thing the game won’t be released. The next Lord of the Rings game appears to be a different type of RPG, which is probably a better fit for what gamers are looking for right now.
Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings MMORPG Was A Big Swing I Was Worried About

Amazon has cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO, a game first announced in 2023. While Amazon Games is still working on a Lord of the Rings video game, reports suggest they’ve put a pause on plans to create a large-scale, ongoing online world similar to World of Warcraft. The cancellation wasn’t entirely unexpected, as recent layoffs at Amazon Games and the declining popularity of their other online game, New World: Aeternum, signaled potential difficulties in getting the MMO finished and released.
After several years in development, the game was cancelled because its creators couldn’t convince the company it would be a worthwhile investment. This is partly due to the challenges facing massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) in general, which require huge amounts of money, time, and effort. With established giants like World of Warcraft and EverQuest dominating the market, and new MMOs struggling to gain traction, it’s difficult to see how even a popular franchise like Lord of the Rings could succeed and remain sustainable in this competitive landscape.
Launching this game was always going to be difficult, and recent struggles of similar online games were a worrying sign. Even with the popular world of Tolkien to build from, entering such a competitive market dominated by established titles was a big risk. Although it’s unfortunate that developers have lost their jobs, it appears the game’s cancellation was likely unavoidable without a quick surge in popularity.
Kingdom Come Gives Me Confidence For Warhorse Studio’s LOTR

Warhorse Studios, the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, has exciting plans for a new game: an immersive RPG set in Middle-earth. This open-world, single-player experience will let players freely explore and shape their own stories. This feels like a better fit for Lord of the Rings fans than a constantly ongoing RPG, offering a defined narrative instead of endless gameplay.
I’m really excited about exploring Middle-earth from a first-person view! What’s even better is that, unlike some online games where you need tons of players to keep things going, the story in this new game will be crafted by the same team that wrote Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. That game had a fantastic, deep story and really made you care about the characters, all while feeling incredibly immersive. That feels like the perfect approach for a Lord of the Rings game – blending a compelling narrative with a world you can really lose yourself in.
This type of detailed storytelling works better as a single-player game than as a massive online game with endless adventures and a large community. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II proves Warhorse Studio can create a captivating, story-focused RPG, and I believe in their ability to do so more than I do in Amazon Games’ chances of successfully launching a new MMO in today’s market. As someone who enjoys both Lord of the Rings and story-driven RPGs, I’m really pleased to see the series heading in this direction.
