As a longtime fan of both DC comics and Lady Gaga’s musical prowess, I must say that the upcoming film “Joker: Folie à Deux” has me utterly intrigued! The idea of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn embarking on a twisted love story, set against a backdrop of musical numbers and classic Hollywood influences, is simply tantalizing.
The highly anticipated sequel, “Joker: Madness Part 2“, is nearly here, and the early responses to this DC-inspired movie have been quite unexpected. This film tells a romantic tale between Arthur Fleck/Joker (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and Harleen Quinzel (portrayed by Lady Gaga), with musical elements and tributes to classic Hollywood woven in. Although most of the musical scenes from “Madness Part 2” haven’t been featured in trailers, fans of Lady Gaga’s long-standing pop career are eagerly awaiting her performance in the movie – and it seems they won’t be getting what they expect. In a recent chat with Vogue, Phoenix and Gaga discussed how she had to learn to sing off-key while filming “Madness Part 2“, to align her singing voice more closely with Harleen’s energy.
Phoenix disclosed that he had asked her to sing in a less polished manner, omitting her usual vibrato. Her vibrato is stunning, but it seemed vulnerable when she sang without it. However, once she stepped back from technicalities, she discovered the true voice of her character.
In her words, “I put a lot of effort into that, attempting to correct my own methods,” Gaga stated. “You see, Ally Maine in ‘A Star Is Born’ is a singer and the movie revolves around musical people,” she clarified. “However, this film has nothing to do with that at all.”
What Is Joker 2 About?
In a new musical titled “Joker: Madness Part 2“, directed by Todd Phillips, we delve into the complex relationship between Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn. Much of the story is expected to unfold within Arkham Asylum. Alongside Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, the cast includes Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.
Previously, Beetz expressed her agreement with the film’s musical aspects, stating, “It truly resonates with me.” She was not taken aback by Todd’s innovative portrayal of the character, as she admires musicals and views them as a means for characters to express deep emotions through song and dance, whether in sadness or joy. On a personal level, Beetz finds that singing and dancing serves as a therapeutic outlet for her, especially during challenging times. She recalled an instance when she was going through a particularly tough period in her life, and found relief by dancing and crying alone. Consequently, she believes Arthur, who is experiencing intense emotions, would find solace in expressing himself through dance and song. Given that the Joker is known for his complex personality, Beetz feels this musical approach fits him well.
Is Joker 2 in the DC Universe?
Folie à Deux” doesn’t fall under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe of movies and TV shows on Max, as it belongs to a different canon, known as DC Elseworlds. Previously, James Gunn mentioned his involvement in the film, having provided feedback on the final cut. However, he clarified that the Joker sequel is among the rare DC films being overseen by Warner Bros. Pictures due to its early development stage.
At the point when we joined, Todd had already immersed himself deeply into “Joker” – I had seen it and provided feedback, but most of the work was done with Warner Bros., where it originated. Everything related to live-action moving forward that we’re part of. (Paraphrased)
Joker: Folie ? Deux will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, October 4th.
