As a fan with a rich history of Marvel comics under my belt, I must say that the VFX work in Deadpool & Wolverine has left me utterly astounded! The way Cassandra Nova’s sinister hands invaded our heroes’ minds was nothing short of chilling, and it’s all thanks to the genius of Swen Gillberg and his team.
In a new visual effects (VFX) video, the duo of Deadpool and Wolverine reveals the intricate process behind Cassandra Nova’s manipulation of our heroes. This film is brimming with thrilling scenes, and the chilling villain certainly fits the bill. Marvel Studios demonstrates how Emma Corrin’s telepathic terror was brought to life on-screen. Deadpool & Wolverine VFX Supervisor Swen Gillberg guides fans through Nova’s unique ability to delve into the minds of her foes. This requires a deep understanding of the comic book origins of this character, which are quite complex. Director Shawn Levy specifically wanted to incorporate a few favorite panels from the comics into the movie. Corrin’s performance masterfully balances menace with humor and numerous Marvel references that run throughout Deadpool & Wolverine.
Gillberg shared that during our design phases, we experimented with various skin depths. Personally, I found thinner skin more appealing as it allows for a closer view of her knuckles through his skin. There’s certainly a skull underneath those heads, and she skillfully navigates around it. Moreover, when the fingers graze over the eyeballs, the eyes appear to bulge out, which adds an exciting touch.
“To begin with, Shawn and the VFX specialists utilized comic book imagery as a guide. They focused on particular frames from the comics that they wanted to replicate accurately. For instance, Emma’s fingers often appear through her nostrils, eyes, and ears. When replacing limbs or faces, we needed somewhere for Emma’s hand to go. So, we’d either move it off-screen or position it out of the frame. During filming, we took clean plates to remove any unwanted arms or hands. Afterward, in post-production, we created a fully digital hand and arm, which was then integrated with a mostly digital face.”
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Big Villain Was On A Tear
In the midst of Cassandra Nova’s intense battle against our heroes, aiming to terminate the Multiverse, there was a moment that left fans reeling – the villain swiftly eliminating Johnny Storm very early in the movie. It’s not often that Chris Evans encounters such a brutal end in a production. GQ questioned Corrin about this unexpected twist and their thoughts on stunning the audience in such a manner.
Corrin looked pleased as punch, admitting, “I was absolutely miserable during our screening the other day. You see, we watched it after the New York premiere, with Lincoln Center filled with enthusiastic fans. They were all ecstatic at the sight of [Evans] on screen. But then, just three minutes in, I ended up killing him. It made me feel terrible. I hid in my seat. Honestly, it was an odd feeling – something I wouldn’t have anticipated if someone had asked me a few years back.”
“I must admit, Marvel is exceptional at incorporating cameos, and it’s not just for fun. They give the audience what they crave, but without overdoing it. Each cameo serves a purpose, and it’s one of those subtle touches that I believe adds depth to their stories. Here’s hoping fans appreciate these cleverly placed appearances as much as I do.”
