Netflix’s newest hit is receiving rave reviews, boasting a perfect score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and millions of viewers. Originally intended as Stan Lee’s last project, the series took nearly ten years to produce, but the long wait proved worthwhile. Added to Netflix just last week, the show offers a unique storyline, similar in tone to The Boys (though less extreme) or Umbrella Academy, and stands apart from typical Marvel content.
Created by Kang Eun-kyung and featuring K-pop star Cha Eun-woo of Astro, the 8-episode series The WONDERfools is a comedy fantasy about superheroes whose powers are more chaotic than evil. The humor comes from the accidental ways these heroes use—and misuse—their abilities. Released all at once on May 15th, the show has received perfect scores from critics (based on a limited number of reviews) and a very high 96% audience rating. Netflix reports that The WONDERfools garnered 2.7 million views in its first few days.
The WONDERfools Started Out As a Stan Lee Series
Originally announced in 2018 as The WONDERfools, the series was initially based on an idea by Stan Lee called The B-Team. This story, not taken from any existing comic book, featured a group of less-known superheroes struggling to manage their powers, as they fought the scientists responsible for giving them those powers. While the idea was optioned after Lee’s passing, his company was involved in the early development. The concept of flawed heroes with uncontrollable abilities and a classic good-versus-evil conflict strongly resembled Lee’s signature style. However, by the time production began in earnest, the series was rebranded as The WONDERfools, and it moved away from being based on Lee’s original concept.
As a total cinema lover, I recently read the synopsis for this new film, and it sounds amazing! It’s set in a small Korean town right before the year 2000, and things start getting really creepy – people are disappearing, and this strange new church is popping up, bringing back bad memories for the town. But the story really centers around three pretty normal, slightly awkward people who suddenly wake up with superpowers. They’re dealing with their own lives, but quickly realize they’re the only ones who can figure out what’s happening and save their town. It sounds like a really fun and thrilling ride!
Many Reddit users are really enjoying how different and refreshing the superhero series is, especially considering how many superhero shows there are right now. People appreciate that the heroes are relatable – they’re just friends who are a bit immature and struggle with their powers. One user specifically praised the show’s humor and how it drew them in quickly, while another highlighted the excellent comedic timing and memorable characters.
