Square Enix is releasing a new Final Fantasy game designed to appeal to longtime fans. Recent mainline Final Fantasy titles, like Final Fantasy XVI and the Final Fantasy VII Remake/Rebirth series, have leaned heavily into action-based combat. While popular with many, this shift disappointed fans who preferred the classic turn-based battles. It appears Square Enix listened to this feedback and is now creating a new game that aims to recapture the feel of older Final Fantasy experiences.
Nintendo’s latest presentation revealed a new Final Fantasy game called Final Fantasy Resonance from Square Enix. This spin-off will be the first in the series to use Square’s popular HD-2D art style – a beautiful look previously featured in games like Octopath Traveler, the remakes of Dragon Quest 1-3, and Live A Live. The game will also feature classic turn-based combat, reminiscent of the original Final Fantasy games, and will give Resonance a visual style similar to those earlier titles.
The story of Final Fantasy Resonance centers around Rain, a commander in the world of Grandshelt. While Rain is the main character, players will also be able to summon classic Final Fantasy characters as “Visions.” So far, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII is the most well-known confirmed Vision, and many more are planned for inclusion.
The game follows Rain, a captain leading a fleet of airships, after he receives an important mission from the royal family. He and his close friend and second-in-command, Lasswell, are tasked with investigating the Earth Shrine, where the protective magic is weakening. When they reach the heart of the shrine, they’re confronted by a powerful, armored figure and are defeated, witnessing the destruction of the Earth Crystal. Now, Rain and Lasswell embark on a quest to safeguard the remaining Crystals around the world, chasing after the enigmatic Veritas of the Dark, and are joined by Fina, a mysterious girl they met in the town of Grandshelt.
The new game Final Fantasy Resonance was revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct, but it won’t be a Nintendo exclusive. Players will be able to enjoy it on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Resonance is launching soon – on October 22nd this fall.
