New Final Fantasy Game Officially Revealed, Coming October 2026

Square Enix revealed a new game during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. It’s the first in the series to feature a unique 2D-HD art style, but fans of Final Fantasy mobile games will recognize the content, as it’s based on previously released material.

2D-HD is a unique art style that debuted in the game Octopath Traveler. It takes the classic, pixelated look of 16-bit games and updates it with modern high-definition graphics. Although Square Enix could have limited this style to the Octopath series, they later expanded its use to Dragon Quest, remaking the first three games with this beautiful visual approach.

Final Fantasy Resonance Is the First 2D-HD Game in the Franchise

Square Enix made several exciting announcements during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, including news about the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 4. Final Fantasy fans were especially thrilled to see Final Fantasy Resonance, a 2D-HD game launching on Nintendo Switch & Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on October 22, 2026. Pre-orders are available now.

In Final Fantasy Resonance, players take on the role of Rain, a knight tasked with safeguarding the world of Lapis from a villainous knight bent on shattering its eight elemental crystals. The game’s battle system is reminiscent of Fire Emblem Engage, allowing players to summon the spirits of legendary Final Fantasy heroes like Cloud Strife, Tidus, Rosa, and the Warrior of Light to assist them. Powerful summons like Shiva and Ifrit are also available to help the party.

Final Fantasy Resonance has everything old-school fans could want, with the 2D-HD visuals, Chocobos, and even an airship. The only problem is that it isn’t a new game. As confirmed by Square Enix, Final Fantasy Resonance is actually a single-player remake of the first story arc from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile spin-off that was discontinued back in 2024.

The fact that Final Fantasy Resonance is a major reimagining of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius isn’t necessarily a problem. It seems to have removed the frustrating parts of mobile games, such as random item pulls. It’s just disappointing that it isn’t a completely new game, designed specifically for fans of classic Final Fantasy titles.

Players who experienced the launch of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius are already familiar with the story behind Final Fantasy Resonance. However, those who didn’t play – perhaps because Square Enix doesn’t always maintain its mobile games for very long – are in for a pleasant surprise. Final Fantasy Resonance is heavily focused on appealing to fans of the classic Final Fantasy games, and that’s
