A new spinoff anime series based on the popular character Roronoa Zoro from One Piece is currently in development. This announcement comes during a busy year for the One Piece franchise, which has recently resumed its anime adaptation of the Elbaph Arc from the original manga. In addition to the Elbaph Arc and a previously announced spinoff focusing on Nami, this new project will tell a story centered around Zoro.
A new One Piece novel focusing on Zoro’s backstory is officially coming out in Japan on July 3rd. The novel will explore Zoro’s life before he met Luffy, detailing his path to becoming the world’s greatest swordsman from his own point of view. This will provide a look into Zoro’s past that hasn’t been shown in the main One Piece story, and you can see the cover art below.

The new novel, One Piece: ZORO, is written by Jun Esaka, who also wrote the One Piece: Heroines novels, and features illustrations by Nakamuru. The story will explore Zoro’s past, starting with his departure from his village and leading up to his first meeting with Luffy. This novel will delve deeper into Zoro’s origins, expanding on the limited backstory fans have seen so far.
One of the most popular aspects of these new One Piece novels is that they let us see more of the characters and their stories beyond what’s in the original manga. The novel One Piece: Heroines was so well-received that it’s getting its own anime adaptation on July 5th, featuring a brand new adventure for Nami not shown in the main series. It’s clear fans are eager for deeper stories about the characters they love.
What’s Next for One Piece?

Fans of One Piece have a lot to look forward to! New episodes of the anime covering the Elbaph arc are coming soon, and Netflix is currently filming the third season of the live-action series. Later this year, Netflix will release a special LEGO version of One Piece. But that’s not all! Netflix and WIT Studio are also creating a complete remake of the One Piece anime. This new series will retell the entire story from the beginning, starting with Eiichiro Oda’s original manga. It’s currently scheduled to premiere in February 2027 and will consist of seven episodes, adding up to more than five hours of content.
