New Star Trek Release Reveals Lost Plans For Canceled Fan-Favorite Series

It’s been a relatively quiet 60th anniversary year for Star Trek, with few major announcements so far. While there’s still a chance for news – possibly at the upcoming Comic Con – the future of Star Trek on television and film feels a bit uncertain. We’ve seen the cancellation of Starfleet Academy, a few book releases, and fans are anticipating Season 4 of Strange New Worlds this summer, but many are hoping for more new content.

Alongside these releases, fans can enjoy the second installment of the fantastic Red Shirts comic. Staying with comics, IDW is also celebrating Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary with a special one-shot issue. This 68-page comic features 10 short stories highlighting characters like Worf, Sulu, and Harry Mudd. Notably, it also offers a glimpse into what could have been for the animated series Lower Decks, revealing ideas for a potential next season from creator Mike McMahan.

I had a fantastic time writing a story that imagines what future episodes of Lower Decks could be like, picking up right after the season finale. It’s basically a ‘what if?’ scenario where we revisit the crew of the Cerritos to see what they’re up to. And I was lucky enough to collaborate with some incredibly talented artists who brought a fresh visual style to the show – that’s what makes comics so special!

IDW’s 60th Anniversary Comic Adds to Star Trek History

IDW’s comic books have given Star Trek fans exciting options beyond the regular TV series. They’ve published stories like The Last Starship, which brought William Shatner’s Captain Kirk back to life, and Red Shirts, which cleverly focused on the often-overlooked crew members who usually face the most danger. This 60th-anniversary collection celebrates classic Star Trek with familiar characters, and also includes a new story based on Star Trek: The Animated Series by writer Ryan North and artist Derek Charm. There are also tales set within The Next Generation, The Original Series, Starfleet Academy, and even a humorous one-page story from Enterprise. The creative team includes well-known names like Brian Michael Bendis, Christopher Cantwell, David Walker, Meghan Camarena, Mike McMahan, and Michael and Laura Allred.

For fans disappointed by the show’s cancellation, any new Lower Decks content is especially welcome. Creator Mike McMahan has previously expressed optimism about the show’s potential return, noting that the team would love to continue if possible. He mentioned having more stories to tell, a cast eager to reunite, and a producer who enjoys the work! However, he also acknowledged the show already achieved five seasons, which is remarkable in itself.

McMahan also shared that the show’s final season evolved because they knew it was ending, allowing him to create the story he envisioned. He previously mentioned having more stories to tell, and the upcoming 60th Anniversary Comic from IDW will explore those. He’s eager to revive Lower Decks when the opportunity arises – whether through more episodes, a movie, or even a live-action spin-off. For now, the comic is a way to continue the story, and hopefully, its success will open doors for future projects.
