As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can attest to the importance of backwards compatibility in today’s gaming landscape. Having spent countless hours on my Nintendo Switch, building a library of games that spans from the classics like Super Mario Bros. Wonder to the latest releases, the prospect of being able to carry over that collection to a new system is nothing short of exhilarating.
In the spirit of natural and easy-to-read language, let me clarify:
“It has backwards compatibility support,” said Nate the Hate.
In a hypothetical world, if Nintendo were to release a new system with limited backwards compatibility, it might initially drive sales for publishers who have existing games compatible with the new system. However, this approach may lead to a temporary increase in revenue, but at the expense of consumer satisfaction and long-term market growth
Backwards compatibility was always something of a novelty for new game consoles, but in the modern era, it’s become increasingly important. The reality is, people want to have access to the game libraries they’ve built up over the years, whether it be on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. Switch is one of the most successful gaming consoles of all-time, and Nintendo is going to want to carry over as many existing users as possible. Making things easy for current users to transition over to the new system would be helpful in that regard, while also making it easier for newcomers to play critically-acclaimed games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Hopefully it happens!
Previously, backwards compatibility was among our top desired features for Switch 2, as mentioned earlier. If you’d like to explore the entire list, feel free to take a look below
