After an 18-year hiatus since “Dawn of the Dragon,” the beloved PlayStation character Spyro the Dragon is back! Fans will be excited to see the purple dragon return in “Spyro: A Realm Beyond,” which is set to launch on PS5 in 2027.
I’m satisfied with this release, but the game’s developer, Toys for Bob, hopes this isn’t a one-off. They’re aiming to revive the Spyro franchise with plans for “many new games” in the future.
In an interview with GamesRadar, studio head Paul Yan revealed the team’s ambition to create a lasting future for Spyro. He explained they aren’t just aiming for a single new game, but envision multiple releases, hoping this current game is the first of many.
Yan explained that to move the Spyro series forward, the developers need to try new things and take risks with what’s always worked before. He admitted this could be challenging, but Toys for Bob is committed to exploring these new directions.
Whatever comes next after Spyro: Realm Beyond, the developers at Toys for Bob promise to stay true to what makes Spyro special. They’ll first focus on creating a strong base that honors the original games, and then add new gameplay elements and features on top of that foundation.
Toys for Bob wants to “take some leaps” with Spyro, according to Yan.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is set to be the most ambitious game in the series so far. The story follows Spyro as he’s unexpectedly stranded and, while trying to find his way back, encounters a dangerous new enemy called the Scavs. He’ll need to team up with new friends and defend this world from being permanently altered.
