The 1990s were a fantastic time for Disney animation fans. Disney was experiencing a second creative peak, producing some of its most beloved films. Plus, the Disney Channel consistently released shows that became true classics, like Recess, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, and Talespin. There were also spin-off series based on popular movies like Hercules, Aladdin, Chip ‘n Dale, and Mighty Ducks. It was a remarkable period for the company, and one series really stood out from the rest: Gargoyles.
As a lifelong fan, I always felt Gargoyles was tragically cut short. It only ran for three seasons, from 1994 to 1997, and the third season suffered from behind-the-scenes issues – a network change to ABC and stricter rules really impacted things, even causing the original creator, Greg Weisman, to leave. But even with that dip in quality, the show built up so much love that people kept talking about it for thirty years! There were whispers of a movie for a while, but nothing ever came of it. Then, in 2023, we finally heard about a live-action reboot, which has been pretty quiet since. But here’s some amazing news to tide us over: Greg Weisman is back involved! A new comic series, continuing the story from 1997, is officially happening, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Check out the covers – they look fantastic!

Gargoyles is Reviving One of Disney’s Best 1990s Animated Series

In 2020, Greg Weisman shared his deep connection to Gargoyles, calling it a passion project. He expressed excitement about the show being available on Disney+, hoping it would reignite interest and potentially lead to a revival. He clarified he doesn’t profit from its streaming but is thrilled by the possibility it offers. Weisman has extensive plans for the series, including a 315-page timeline and numerous ideas for spin-offs, and he’s eager to return and expand the Gargoyles universe.
Weisman was right! He’s excited to announce a new, ongoing comic series that he’s been developing for thirty years, and believes longtime fans will love it. But it’s also a perfect starting point for new readers unfamiliar with Gargoyles – the story will provide everything needed to get hooked. This comes at a great time, with a live-action reboot on the way and a surge in popularity for 90s cartoons like X-Men ’97, which successfully revived X-Men: The Animated Series in the same year this new Gargoyles series is set.
The latest Gargoyles series arrives in August, created by Greg Weisman with art by Gerardo Gambone, colors by Robby Bevard, and lettering by Jeff Eckleberry. Meghan Hetrick, Sebastian Piriz, Drew Moss, and Frank Paur contributed the cover art. Here’s the official description of the series, provided by Dynamite Entertainment:
A thousand years ago, life was dominated by fear and old beliefs. It was a dark time… the age of the Gargoyles! These creatures were warriors who protected humans, but were ultimately betrayed and magically turned to stone for a millennium. Now, in modern-day Manhattan, the spell has been broken, and they’ve returned! They are the defenders of the night! Whether you’re a longtime fan of the animated series or comics, or new to the story, this comic offers exciting action, compelling characters, and a satisfying story.
The original Gargoyles show unfolded in real time, and the new comic series picks up exactly where it left off, bringing the story to 1997. This series invites fans to relive the exciting energy of 1990s cartoons, with Gargoyles leading the way. The Manhattan Clan of gargoyles rarely have eggs – only once every 20 years – and they’ve been lovingly caring for one they call “Egwardo.” Unfortunately, their longtime enemy, Demona, has stolen it! While desperately searching for the egg, the Defenders of the Night must also confront an ancient, incredibly powerful evil that has awakened and seeks revenge on the entire world. Expect all of this and more in each issue of this thrilling new comic series.
Editor Nate Cosby is incredibly excited about the new Gargoyles series, promising it will both honor the original and introduce fresh elements. He calls it a perfect starting point for new fans and assures longtime viewers that creator Greg Weisman is skillfully weaving decades of Gargoyles history into the new story, with compelling emotional depth for Goliath and the entire clan. It sounds like a very promising continuation!
