Karl Urban reveals whether he would play Indiana Jones.
Following the release of “Dial of Destiny” in 2023, the future of the “Indiana Jones” series is up in the air. While Harrison Ford played the iconic archaeologist one last time and the film earned $384 million globally, it’s considered a financial letdown because it cost $387.2 million to make. Now, questions are being raised about whether another actor will ever take on the role of Indy, and if so, who that might be.
Comedian Steve Byrne jokingly suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that Karl Urban would be a perfect Indiana Jones if Harrison Ford ever retired from the role, saying Urban “would crush it.” Urban himself responded, acknowledging the compliment but firmly stating that Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones and cannot be replaced.
This marks the first post from the actor known for The Boys on X (formerly Twitter) since March 28, 2023. At that time, he announced he would lose his blue verification check because he doesn’t want to pay for social media, and warned his followers to be careful of fake accounts and scams.
So far, no one has been officially announced to take over the role of Indiana Jones. There was talk a while back about Chris Pratt potentially playing the part, but he said in 2022 that those rumors weren’t true. He also mentioned that Harrison Ford’s statement about Indiana Jones dying with him made him back away from the idea.
There’s been no official word about Urban taking the role; it’s all just fan casting and rumors at this point. However, his recent comments suggest he isn’t interested, especially considering this is his first activity on X (formerly Twitter) in over three years.
Besides River Phoenix portraying a young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Harrison Ford is the only actor to play the character in the films. However, Indiana Jones has been portrayed by other actors in television and video games. For example, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which ran from 1992 to 1996, featured Sean Patrick Flanery, Corey Carrier, and George Hall as Indiana Jones, and even included an appearance by Ford himself.
The 2024 game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle stars Troy Baker, who not only provides the voice for the main character but also performs the motion capture. Critics loved the game, and especially praised Baker’s performance. He’s also famous for playing Joel Miller in The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Part II.
Lucasfilm and Disney might have been reluctant to replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones because of what happened with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Although Alden Ehrenreich’s performance as Han Solo was generally liked, the film didn’t do well in theaters, which led to big changes in Disney’s plans for future Star Wars movies.
To keep the Indiana Jones adventures going without needing a new actor to play Indy, there’s been talk of creating an animated series or focusing on Short Round as the main character. Short Round, played by Ke Huy Quan, first appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984. Although he hasn’t been in the films since, Quan’s recent success as an actor—including winning an Academy Award—has made this idea even more likely.
Karl Urban has stated he won’t be in any future Indiana Jones films, but he’s been busy with other big projects. He recently finished filming the final season of The Boys as Billy Butcher, played Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II, and starred as Captain Connor in the Prime Video movie The Bluff. He’s also set to star in the upcoming live-action/animated hybrid film I, Object, and is likely to return as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat III if it gets made.
