Red Dwarf writer reveals late co-creator Rob Grant’s wishes for beloved characters in new story

Rob Grant, who co-created the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, finished his last project before he passed away earlier this year: a novel called Red Dwarf: Titan.

Andrew Marshall, who co-wrote the new novel with Grant, has shared his vision for the return of the popular comedy characters. He hopes to give more depth to Dave Lister (played by Craig Charles on TV) and create stronger, more developed female characters.

Marshall told TopMob that Rob wanted Lister to demonstrate some growth by the end of the story, which he found compelling. He also expressed interest in hinting at a glimmer of hope for Rimmer’s redemption – a suggestion that Rimmer might not be a lost cause.

He also mentioned that both he and Grant wanted to flesh out the female characters further.

Kochanski will be featured much more prominently in this installment, and we’re also introducing a couple of new female characters.

That was really interesting! It was a fun challenge to develop Rimmer’s rival – a character with a strange, almost romantic connection – and you’ll see how we handled it in the show.

When asked if the show needed a refresh for today’s viewers, Marshall explained that it did, to a degree. The goal was to make it more relevant to current times, which he found to be a fascinating process.

One of the best things about reading is that your imagination creates all the visuals, so a book can feel incredibly grand and detailed without costing anything to produce. It could be a story that would be incredibly expensive to film or adapt, and maybe someday it will be, but we’ll see what happens.

In a conversation with TopMob shortly before his death, Grant explained that Red Dwarf: Titan takes place in a separate universe. This allows the show to feature the same beloved characters while exploring new storylines, addressing the challenge of creating something original without contradicting established continuity.

He explained that the new story will involve Lister and Rimmer receiving a warning from the distant future: unless they take action, all realities will cease to exist. Grant also confirmed that the show will be returning to its classic, humorous style, promising viewers will find it incredibly funny.

The new Red Dwarf novel, Titan, will be released in hardback, ebook, and audio formats on July 16, 2026. You can currently watch Red Dwarf on BBC iPlayer.
