Shailene Woodley Gives Encouraging Answer About Divergent Future After Canceled Last Movie

Young adult and dystopian stories were hugely popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Following the success of The Hunger Games in 2012, many believed this story would be the next big hit.

Despite a strong cast and promising storyline, the series has faced difficulties. After the previous book was divided into two parts but ultimately left incomplete, fans received a hopeful message from lead actress Shailene Woodley in a recent interview.

Shailene Woodley Would Love to End Divergent

The actress known for her role as Tris recently spoke about a new book set in the Divergent world. At BookCon this year, author Veronica Roth announced The Sixth Faction, which isn’t a direct continuation of the original series, but rather a story taking place in an alternate universe. This book will be the first of two.

Woodley admitted the way the movie series concluded felt strange, especially after she couldn’t remember which of the films, specifically Allegiant, a particular quote came from.

She mentioned she’d be interested in making a fourth Divergent movie. She recently learned the author, Veronica Roth, wrote a new book in the series, and she’s eager to read it. She jokingly suggested they might make another film when she’s older, saying the story could feature Tris as a mother.

She mentioned that she really enjoyed working out a particular plot detail as an actress playing Tris, especially because it happened near the end of the third book, which was later divided into two movies.

Shailene Woodley explained that Tris’s death is a crucial part of the story. She felt it was fitting for a main character to meet their end, especially given the dangerous life Tris led. Woodley also described the ending as beautifully poetic and realistic, considering all the risks Tris took.

The Last Divergent Movie Was Canceled

Popular young adult book series like The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner became huge successes as movies. While Divergent had a good story, the films didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Three movies came out featuring Shailene Woodley and a talented cast including Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Jeff Daniels, Maggie Q, Bill Skarsgård, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, and several other actors.

Despite this, the film series received poor reviews and didn’t perform well at the box office. The first movie scored 41% from critics – the best of the series – and 69% from audiences, which wasn’t particularly strong. The second film saw even lower approval, with critics giving it a 29% rating and audiences a 58%. The final film, Allegiant (2016), was the worst-received, earning only 11% from critics and 41% from audiences.

The entire movie series earned $765.4 million despite costing $305 million to make, barely covering its expenses and making a continuation unlikely. The final film, following Allegiant, only brought in $179.2 million, while costing an estimated $110 to $142 million to produce.
