Sheriff Country Season 2: Release Date, Story, & Everything We Know

Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from the season 1 finale of Sheriff Country, specifically episode 20, “Mexico.” The first season wrapped up with significant developments for Mickey (Morena Baccarin), and the show has been renewed for a second season. The survivors now face even greater challenges after a shocking death and an unexpected reunion. Fortunately, Sheriff Country is a self-contained show and doesn’t depend on its parent series, Fire Country, which will be beneficial as the story continues.

CBS added a second spinoff series, Sheriff Country, to its Friday night lineup for the 2025-2026 television season, and it quickly became even more popular than Boston Blue. Starring Morena Baccarin, the show is a direct continuation of the world of Fire Country – not only because Baccarin’s character has a family connection to a Fire Country character, but also because CBS introduced the series through an episode within Fire Country‘s second season. Baccarin made a few more appearances on Fire Country during its third season before Sheriff Country officially premiered during the fourth season.

I’ve always loved how CBS connects its shows with characters popping up in different series! And with how well Sheriff Country is doing, I’m really hoping it leads to another spinoff, maybe one set in Edgewater. It’s true, not every attempt has worked out, though. I was excited when I heard Jared Padalecki – you know, from Supernatural – was possibly getting his own show connected to Fire and Sheriff Country, but it hasn’t happened yet. Fingers crossed for the future!

You can definitely expect to see Mickey and friends return for another season of Sheriff Country, even after everything that happened in the first season’s finale.

Sheriff Country Season 2 Has Already Been Confirmed By CBS

Viewers can rest easy knowing Sheriff Country will be back for a second season! CBS announced the renewal in December 2025, along with a second season for Boston Blue. The show was a hit, earning a renewal after only six episodes. Plus, Fire Country season 5 is also confirmed, completing CBS’s Friday night lineup.

It wasn’t unexpected that Sheriff Country was renewed for another season, as it actually performed better in ratings than Fire Country. CBS announced that the show averaged 7.6 million viewers across both CBS and Paramount+ within the first week of its first five episodes. This represents a 33% increase in viewership compared to S.W.A.T., which aired in the same time slot last year.

We don’t have the final viewership numbers for the season finale yet, but in April, Sheriff Country was the only CBS drama airing on Friday nights to make it into the top 20 broadcast and streaming shows, averaging 10.7 million viewers. Initially, Boston Blue was more popular, but by the end of the 2025-2026 season, Morena Baccarin’s series, Sheriff Country, had pulled ahead. Both shows were quickly renewed for a second season, but Sheriff Country ultimately performed better.

When Will Sheriff Country Season 2 Release?

CBS hasn’t announced a premiere date for season 2 of Sheriff Country yet, and it could be a few months before they do. However, CBS has confirmed the show will return this fall and will continue to air on Fridays at 8 PM, the same time slot that performed well last season. If CBS follows a similar schedule to last year, we can likely expect the new season to premiere sometime in mid-October.

After Sheriff Country, Fire Country will air at 9 PM and Boston Blue at 10 PM, but not for the entire season. Fire Country’s fifth season will be cut short, with only 13 episodes. The network hasn’t announced what will follow Fire Country after that, or if the planned medical drama spin-off will take its place. Sheriff Country, however, is expected to return for a full 20-episode season.

What Sheriff Country Season 2’s Story Could Be

Honestly, before the season one finale, everyone expected CBS to do another crossover between Sheriff Country and Fire Country. It just seemed like a given! The only tricky part was that both shows film in different parts of Canada, which must make it a logistical headache. Now that Fire Country had a shorter season, I’m a little worried there won’t be enough time to pull off a big two-part crossover event. I’m still hoping for it, though!

The season finale left viewers with several major twists. Mickey’s relationship with Alec is finished, especially now that we know Alec was secretly working as a corrupt police officer. He was killed in a showdown with FBI Deputy Director Eva Santos, but the biggest surprise was the reveal that Eva is actually Mickey’s mother. This revelation will significantly impact both Mickey and his father, Wes, in the upcoming second season, as Wes is now involved in the situation as an undercover informant.

Matt Lopez, an executive producer for the show, hinted at what’s coming in season 2. He told TVLine that the season will begin with a time jump and reveal what happened during a previously unseen period. Viewers will also see Mickey still struggling with the consequences of past events.

For viewers hoping to see a romance develop between Mickey and Boone, creator Lopez has hinted that season 2 of Sheriff Country will delve further into their feelings for each other. This time, however, the focus might be more on Mickey’s perspective. It looks like Mickey will face challenges in all areas of his life.

Even though the show lost actor Wes Chatham, the cast of Sheriff Country is growing for the upcoming season. Amanda Arcuri and Ian Quinlan, who appeared in several episodes last season, will now be full-time series regulars. You’ll be seeing more of their characters, Skye Fraley and Deputy Hank Iglesias, when the new season starts this fall. In the meantime, it’s worth revisiting the season 1 finale on Paramount+ – the show managed to fit a lot into that one hour!
