The recent four-season Star Wars series dramatically changed how lightsabers are portrayed. These iconic weapons have been a core part of the Star Wars universe since the original 1977 film, when Luke Skywalker first turned on his father’s blue lightsaber in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home on Tatooine. Lightsabers are the legendary weapons of the Jedi and Sith, featured in the galaxy’s most important battles, and each one is uniquely crafted for its user.
When Disney bought Star Wars, they quickly began developing their own stories within that universe. Their first effort was Star Wars Rebels, an animated series that followed a group of early rebels known as the Ghost crew. This team included two Jedi: Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi who survived the purge of Order 66 and went by the name Caleb Dume, and his apprentice, Ezra Bridger, a young orphan who used his skills to get by on the planet Lothal.
In the first season of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra created a lightsaber unlike any seen before in the franchise. Instead of a standard, rounded handle, he built a multi-tool weapon. It held his blue lightsaber blade, but also included a blaster – set to stun – which helped him protect himself until he mastered deflecting blaster fire with the saber itself. The lightsaber’s design was boxy and practical, a stark contrast to the sleek, curved lightsabers typically used by Jedi, but it was perfect for Ezra as he began his journey as a Jedi in hiding.
Why Ezra’s Unique Lightsaber Design Suited His Character
Each lightsaber reflects the personality of its Jedi or Sith wielder, and Ezra Bridger’s was particularly fitting. Unlike many other Jedi learners (except Luke Skywalker), Ezra didn’t begin training with a lightsaber at a young age; he had to learn while constantly evading capture. His master, Kanan Jarrus, was also a relatively new teacher, having gone into hiding as a teenager after the Jedi Order fell. It took time for both of them to become comfortable in their roles as master and apprentice.
It’s understandable that Ezra wanted other ways to protect himself, particularly when facing so many stormtroopers and Jedi hunters. The blaster built into his lightsaber reminded him of his difficult past on Lothal, before he joined the Ghost crew and learned about the Force. It also showed how skilled he was with mechanics and how adaptable he was in a fight. Ultimately, Ezra was still new to being a Jedi, and his lightsaber showed that he still had a lot to learn.
Ezra’s first lightsaber was ultimately broken in a fight with Darth Vader. After that, between seasons two and three of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra built a new lightsaber. This one had a green blade and a smoother, more modern handle. Though it was unfortunate his original lightsaber was lost, the new one represented how much stronger he was becoming as a Jedi, showing he was taking control of his abilities and choosing to resist the dark side.
Was Ezra Bridger’s Lightsaber Against The Jedi Way?
As Obi-Wan Kenobi points out in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, blasters are rather crude weapons. The Jedi are meant to be guardians of peace and life, and the lightsaber embodies that ideal. Unlike blasters, which can quickly harm many people, lightsabers encourage one-on-one duels and can defend against more dangerous weapons. Lightsabers that aren’t red represent hope, rather than control or fear.
Even though it could fire a stun blast, Ezra’s first lightsaber was ideal for his Jedi training. In fact, the stun function made it more focused on defense than many other lightsabers. It allowed Ezra to protect himself and others without ever causing fatal harm. The blaster component was never stronger than the lightsaber’s blade itself. As both the Sith and Jedi have repeatedly shown, a lightsaber is one of the galaxy’s most dangerous weapons, and its power depends entirely on the wielder.
By the time of Star Wars Rebels, the Jedi Order was gone. While older Jedi Masters might not have created a lightsaber like Ezra’s, they also hadn’t faced a galaxy as perilous and brutal as the one under the Empire’s control. Ezra’s unusual lightsaber allowed him to operate more discreetly, and he ultimately became a powerful Jedi and a key figure in the Rebel Alliance, successfully liberating Lothal and defeating the Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. In a galaxy desperately needing Jedi, his accomplishments were truly all anyone could have hoped for.
