Stargate superfans hope other streamers will pick up cancelled series after petition and 7-year campaign

Fans who started a petition to revive the cancelled series Stargate have shared what they’d like to see happen – hoping another streaming service will pick it up if Amazon decides not to continue with the show.

Shane and Brian Montgomery, known as the Popcast Brothers, have been working to get a new Stargate series made since 2019. When a planned revival by Martin Gero fell through at Amazon, they started a petition that has since gained over 60,000 signatures.

In a recent interview with TopMob, Shane explained that they had been working to get the original Stargate co-creator, Brad Wright, involved in a potential revival. Wright had been developing new Stargate ideas for years and was considered the best person to lead the franchise, ensuring it honored the show’s history.

After Amazon acquired MGM, we remained supportive of Brad’s involvement. However, when Martin was announced as the showrunner for a new series – given his history with the original Stargate – we fully backed him as well.

This petition is a crucial way to demonstrate to Amazon the strong fan base eager for a new Stargate series, and we’re hoping for a large number of signatures! Stargate is a hugely successful science fiction franchise, and we believe it has a lot more potential to offer viewers if it’s revived.

He explained they’re hoping to gather over a million signatures on the petition. With so many Stargate fans worldwide – millions, in fact – they need to demonstrate to Amazon a strong demand for a new series. This new show should respect the original while also offering fresh stories for modern viewers.

If Amazon decides not to continue with Stargate, we’d be thrilled if they allowed another streaming service to take over the franchise, especially if it meant Martin, Brad Wright, or Joe Mallozzi could develop new Stargate content.

According to Variety, Amazon decided to cancel the show because executives worried the creative direction, led by producer Brad Wright, wouldn’t attract viewers beyond dedicated Stargate fans.

Many fans, including Shane and Brian, have taken issue with that argument.

According to Shane, Amazon already has a strong starting point for a new Stargate series, thanks to the millions of dedicated fans worldwide who have been waiting for over 15 years.

We don’t understand the current approach. A fresh show could really appeal to a wide, modern audience. Look at the success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ – it captivated younger viewers with a story set in another galaxy involving an alien, but it was ultimately a very human and heartfelt story.

A new Stargate series has incredible potential. Just think of the exciting new planets and adventures it could offer! There’s a real demand for quality science fiction and fantasy right now, and Stargate could fill that gap.

The Stargate story began with a movie in 1994 and has grown into a larger universe with several TV shows and films. A new series was first revealed in November.

Joseph Mallozzi, an executive producer on the original Stargate and a consultant for the new series, confirmed its cancellation on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that the creator, Brannon Braga, had been working on the show for over two years, developing a story that would both attract new fans and stay true to the established Stargate universe.

He explained that the show succeeded by staying true to what made the original series great – exciting action, thrilling adventures, a sense of discovery, heartwarming moments, comedy, and the strong bonds between its characters. Because of this successful approach, a new Stargate series was approved in November 2025. However, he announced that the original creative direction for the new series has now been changed.

It truly breaks my heart to think we won’t get to experience that world and those characters – or reconnect with some beloved faces from previous seasons. I’m especially saddened for the amazingly gifted writers who poured so much effort and passion into making this show so special.

This is for Martin, who remained incredibly positive even when things were difficult, and always worked hard to create a show that would both please existing fans and attract new ones. It’s also for the devoted Stargate fans who waited patiently for a continuation they would have truly enjoyed.
