Starz first gained major recognition with the gladiator series Spartacus, created by Steven S. Knight, which ran for four successful seasons. So, fans were thrilled when Knight returned to the world of Spartacus with Spartacus: House of Ashur. However, despite receiving positive reviews – a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes – the show was cancelled after only one season.
Unfortunately, Starz has cancelled Spartacus: House of Ashur after just one season. However, the show’s producers, Lionsgate Television, are currently looking for a new home for it on other streaming or television platforms (according to Deadline). While viewers generally enjoyed the new series, ratings weren’t as strong as the original Spartacus from 2010, and reports suggest the show struggled to attract a consistent audience.
Spartacus: House of Ashur And Starz Evidently Don’t Mesh As Well As They Used To
The report indicates a key reason for the show’s cancellation was its viewership. Starz aims to attract female and diverse audiences, and Spartacus: House of Ashur primarily appealed to white men. However, this doesn’t reflect the show’s content itself, as House of Ashur actually featured a diverse cast and highlighted women and underrepresented characters, particularly during its first season.
The recent separation of Starz and Lionsgate also creates complications. Because of the split, Starz no longer has the rights to House of Ashur. This is a problem because Starz is now prioritizing shows and projects it fully owns. When House of Ashur was initially approved, that wasn’t the situation, but the company split has left the show in a difficult position.
Lionsgate is currently looking for a new home for the show on other streaming services and networks, and it’s likely to be picked up given its strong reviews and positive response from viewers. While most seasons of Spartacus have received good ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, House of Ashur stands out with a 91% approval rating from critics and a 63% audience score. If another platform decides to continue the series, fans would almost certainly tune in.
