The Sinister Six started as a team-up of six of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes, who figured they’d have a better chance against him if they worked together. They first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 in 1964, but their initial strategy – each villain fighting Spider-Man individually to tire him out – failed. Since then, the team has gone through many changes, with different members and leaders taking charge. While Doctor Octopus and Green Goblin have often led the group, the Sinister Six has varied greatly over the years. The original team debuted in the 1960s, and as of the 2020s, there have been ten different versions. Here’s a ranking of those ten official Sinister Six lineups, based on their impact in comic books.
10) Sinister Seven

Out of the first ten iterations of the Sinister Six, the Sinister Seven – which first appeared in 1995 – is generally considered the least impressive. Created by the Hobgoblin during the Clone Saga in Spider-Man Unlimited #9, this team’s sole purpose was to track down and eliminate Kaine, Peter Parker’s volatile clone. The lineup consisted of Mysterio, Electro, Vulture, Beetle, Shocker, and Scorpia. While they did find Kaine, he nearly defeated them all before Spider-Man intervened and rescued the villains. Ultimately, the Sinister Seven failed to achieve their objective and didn’t contribute anything meaningful to Spider-Man’s story.
9) Sinister Six #4 (1999, Vol. 2)

This iteration of the Sinister Six first appeared in their own comic series, Sinister Six Vol. 2, with crossovers in Amazing Spider-Man #12 and Peter Parker: Spider-Man #12. Notably, Sandman took the lead, recruiting Venom (Eddie Brock), Kraven the Hunter (Alyosha Kravinoff), Electro, Mysterio (Daniel Berkhart), and Vulture. The team formed as part of Sandman’s pursuit of Doctor Octopus. However, things nearly ended disastrously when Venom attempted to devour the entire group, until Spider-Man intervened and saved them.
8) Sinister Six #3 — “Revenge of the Sinister Six”

“Revenge of the Sinister Six,” appearing in Spider-Man issues #18-23 (1991-1992) and illustrated by Erik Larsen, is considered a standout story for the villainous team. Doctor Octopus assembled the group, which included Mysterio, Vulture, Hobgoblin (Macendale), Electro, and Gog – who replaced Sandman after he decided to stay on the side of good, even warning Spider-Man about their plans. This powerful iteration of the Sinister Six posed such a threat that heroes like the Fantastic Four, Nova, Deathlok, Solo, Sleepwalker, and even the Hulk had to join forces to defeat them. While a memorable team, it exemplified some of the over-the-top style common in 1990s comics, sometimes distracting from the core strengths of the Sinister Six concept.
7) Superior Six

The Superior Six first appeared in Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #5-7 in 2013. Doctor Octopus, posing as Spider-Man, kidnapped several former villains – Sandman, Electro, Chameleon, Vulture, and Mysterion – and used surgery to implant mind-control devices, forcing them to work as his supposed hero team. This control continued until Sun-Girl disrupted it with an electromagnetic attack during a battle with the Masters of Evil, causing the villains to rebel. Though not a direct continuation of any previous team, the Superior Six were a unique concept inspired by classic villain groups.
6) Sinister Six #6 — Boomerang’s Sinister Six

In 2013, Boomerang formed his own version of the Sinister Six, recruiting Beetle, Living Brain, Overdrive, Shocker, and Speed Demon. The team quickly lost a member when the Superior Spider-Man reprogrammed Living Brain, but Boomerang jokingly suggested they keep the name and just divide the profits among the remaining five. While known as the Sinister Six, this group’s most memorable adventures actually happened in the comic series The Superior Foes of Spider-Man (2013-2015) by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber, which many consider the most enjoyable Sinister Six comic ever made.
5) Sinister Six #7 — “Sinister War”

The most extensive Sinister Six lineup ever appeared in 2021’s “Sinister War,” beginning in Amazing Spider-Man #64. Led by Doctor Octopus, the team initially included Sandman, Electro, Kraven the Hunter (who had been resurrected), Mysterio, and Lizard. This was all orchestrated by Kindred to defeat Spider-Man, culminating in a chaotic battle with six different Sinister Six teams attacking him simultaneously. Surprisingly, Boomerang’s team even tried to assist Spider-Man. Ultimately, Spider-Man survived only when Doctor Octopus turned against his fellow villains.
4) Sinister Six #5 — “Ends of the Earth”

The “Ends of the Earth” storyline featured a Sinister Six team assembled for Spider-Man’s 50th anniversary in Amazing Spider-Man issues #682-687 (2012). Written by Dan Slott with art by Stefano Caselli and Humberto Ramos, the team—led once again by Doctor Octopus—included Mysterio, Sandman, Electro, Rhino, and Chameleon. Doctor Octopus publicly presented himself as trying to solve global warming as a way to earn forgiveness, but his true goal was to control the planet. Stopping them required the combined efforts of Spider-Man, the Avengers, Black Widow, and Silver Sable, making this the first time the Sinister Six posed a worldwide danger.
3) Sinister Twelve

The Marvel Knights: Spider-Man comic featured the largest ever Sinister Six lineup, with twelve villains uniting to defeat Spider-Man. Led by the Green Goblin, the team included Boomerang, Chameleon, Electro, Hammerhead, Hydro-Man, Lizard, Sandman, Shocker, Tombstone, Venom, and Vulture. While they battled Spider-Man and Black Cat, Norman Osborn specifically targeted Mary Jane Watson. Spider-Man needed help from major heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Daredevil, Yellowjacket, and the Fantastic Four to overcome this threat. This event also laid the groundwork for Norman Osborn’s future Dark Avengers team, as it was where he transformed Mac Gargan into Venom.
2) Sinister Six #2 — “Return of the Sinister Six”

Doctor Octopus reunited the Sinister Six in 1990 for a story arc called “Return of the Sinister Six,” which ran in Amazing Spider-Man issues #334-339. Written by David Michelinie and illustrated by Erik Larsen, the story featured Hobgoblin (with Jason Macendale taking over after Kraven’s death), Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, and Sandman. Their scheme involved releasing a toxin into the atmosphere, with Doc Ock holding the only antidote, as part of a plan for world domination. This was the first major Sinister Six storyline in over 26 years, and it revitalized the team, paving the way for future adventures.
1) The Original Sinister Six

The original Sinister Six is considered the most iconic version of the team, establishing the foundation for future lineups, though it took 26 years for them to reunite. First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (1964), created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the team consisted of Doctor Octopus leading Vulture, Sandman, Electro, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter. Their plan was to exhaust Spider-Man by attacking him individually, making him vulnerable for a final showdown. Ultimately, Spider-Man defeated them all, but this initial team remains the most memorable version of the Sinister Six in Marvel Comics.
