The Horror of Godzilla #1 Will Make You Think About the Kaiju’s Start Very Differently
The first issue of The Horror of Godzilla takes a deliberately slow approach, which surprisingly works well for a monster story. Instead of immediately showing Godzilla destroying things, the comic focuses on building suspense and a feeling of dread. From the very first panel, it’s clear this story will be more than just a typical Godzilla rampage. This unsettling atmosphere is created through excellent dialogue and even more so by Tristan Jones’ incredible artwork. Jones’ attention to detail is remarkable and genuinely disturbing – one panel, showing the reaction of two characters to their actions, is particularly haunting.
The narrative then shifts between two main storylines. One follows the scientists responsible for awakening Godzilla, as they face the consequences of their experiment and the resulting devastation – a gripping and stressful situation as accountability clashes with disaster. However, the true horror lies in the experiences of those directly impacted by Godzilla’s initial attack. Here, the sheer scale of Godzilla’s monstrous power and brutality is fully realized, with Parker and Sheridan masterfully creating a sense of genuine horror and confusion using concise and impactful writing.
The Horror of Godzilla Is Just Beginning
Beyond the skillful building of suspense and realistic disaster scenes, the first issue of The Horror of Godzilla truly excels at creating a sense of dread that’s just beginning. There’s a moment where a scientist briefly feels hopeful that things might be salvaged – this marks the true start of the story’s central conflict. While this optimism feels desperate, the writing cleverly leaves you feeling uneasy. You find yourself hoping for heroes, but the story subtly conveys, through both the narrative and the characters’ expressions, that hope is likely misplaced.
This story starts with a misleading sense of hope, quickly plunging into a truly terrifying version of Godzilla. Even though the series is short – only four issues – it’s already clear that it’s building towards something incredibly frightening. Prepare to see Godzilla in a whole new, disturbing light.
