The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 cast tease Andy Serkis’s “powerful” performance in secret role

As a huge Critical Role fan, I was so excited to hear that Andy Serkis – yes, the Gollum – is joining the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina for season 4! They’ve hinted at what his character will be like, and honestly, it sounds amazing. I can’t wait to see what he brings to the show.

The animated series based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons web show, Critical Role, continues to attract well-known guest stars. The latest addition joins a fantastic group that already includes David Tennant, Dominic Monaghan, Stephanie Beatriz, Billy Boyd, and the late Lance Reddick.

Despite the exciting news shared by cast members Sam Riegel and Matt Mercer, they didn’t reveal which character Andy Serkis will be voicing in the new season, sparking a lot of guessing online.

The new season of the animated series is based on the fourth story arc from the first campaign of The Adventures of Taryon Darrington, and features a variety of memorable and exciting characters.

In a statement to TopMob, Critical Role’s Taliesin Jaffe highlighted Andy Serkis’s impressive acting and expressed his excitement for fans to experience it.

The voice actor let slip what felt like the biggest hint yet about Andy Serkis’s character, and it sounds like he’s going to be a seriously intimidating presence this season. As a huge fan, I’m already getting chills thinking about it!

He explained that hearing someone recreate a difficult moment from the game – especially after watching and listening to Matt experience it for so long – was surprisingly more frightening than actually being in the dangerous situation itself.

As a huge film fan, I wasn’t surprised to hear Andy Serkis might be playing a villain this season. He’s done it before, and brilliantly, so it wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken on a darker role.

Andy Serkis is a master of performance capture, and I’ve always been blown away by his range. Everyone knows him as Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, but he’s done so much more! He brought the chilling Supreme Leader Snoke to life in Star Wars, played the delightfully rogue Ulysses Klaue in several Marvel films, and even tackled the terrifying Knull in Venom: The Last Dance. It’s incredible how versatile he is.

Someone asked if I, as an actor who’s also played Gollum, ever had a ‘Gollum-off’ with Andy Serkis, and Liam O’Brien, another cast member, had the perfect answer. He basically said there’s no competing with Andy – he is the original Gollum, the best there is. Anything I’ve done with the character was just me paying tribute to his amazing performance. It’s true – he really set the bar!

He shared that everyone was incredibly excited and reacted with a lot of enthusiasm when the Lord of the Rings actor was officially cast.

I, like so many others, am a massive Andy Serkis fan! Ashley Johnson really hit the nail on the head – we all are! Especially when you think about his incredible work in Lord of the Rings, he’s just the best, truly the peak of acting for me.

We were just dreaming about the possibility of getting Andy Serkis involved, thinking it was a long shot. Then, surprisingly, he agreed!

Andy Serkis isn’t the only actor from The Lord of the Rings to appear in the animated fantasy series. Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, known for playing Merry and Pippin, previously provided voices for The Legend of Vox Machina.

Travis Willingham, who runs Critical Role and plays Grog Strongjaw on the show, playfully mentioned that the team has a clear objective.

We’re working on casting actors from The Lord of the Rings. Sean Bean is already confirmed, and we’re hoping to get Elijah Wood on board as well – we’re doing everything we can to make it happen!

The first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 are now streaming on Prime Video. You can also watch seasons 1 through 3 on Prime Video, and new users can start a free 30-day trial to access them.
