As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension regarding CD Projekt’s approach to The Witcher 4. Having witnessed the rollercoaster ride that was Cyberpunk 2077’s marketing cycle, I can’t help but appreciate their transparency about learning from past mistakes.
CD Projekt prefers an unusually open approach when it comes to any project they’re working on, revealing its progress at various stages. However, regarding the formal announcement and marketing strategy for the upcoming ‘The Witcher 4’, expect a different approach compared to how they managed ‘Cyberpunk 2077’.
Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, joint CEO of CD Projekt, Michał Nowakowski, talked about Cyberpunk 2077’s marketing cycle, which saw CD Projekt RED entering a prolonged final stretch of marketing with a blowout at E3 2019 with Keanu Reeves onstage, with the game’s release not coming until a year and a half later. That, incidentally, followed a trailer at E3 2018, not to mention a CGI announcement teaser all the way back in January of 2013.
Moving forward, the company plans to adopt shorter marketing timelines for upcoming initiatives, typically spanning a year, a stance they’ve previously mentioned.
Initially, when we formally initiated the marketing campaign with pre-orders, which was similar to Keanu’s appearance at E3 in June 2019, our intention was actually to release the product about a year later. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Consequently, we hadn’t truly prepared for a two-year marketing campaign, and I still believe that a one-year timeframe would be sufficient for promoting this particular game.
He emphasized that we’ve picked up valuable lessons from the past event: “Be confident and announce the exact date only when you are absolutely certain,” he said. “We now possess more reliable means to ensure that certainty, which we demonstrated on a smaller scale with the project called Phantom Liberty.
He mentioned, “Even for a fresh game, we wouldn’t anticipate the campaign to last an excessively long period, say around one year, not two.
Despite a formal announcement being saved for a later date, fans can anticipate occasional updates from Nowakowski. These could include concept art, videos, or other intriguing tidbits to keep the fans excited.
He clarified that although we might playfully hint at some exciting features before a complete unveiling, it doesn’t equate to not teasing or sharing cool content. However, he emphasized that the marketing campaign leading up to the game release is distinct from what he referred to as “the mass attack.” The term “mass attack” refers to when the date is announced, pre-orders begin, and there’s a competitive race from that point to the actual launch of the game.
If someone were to inquire about The Witcher 4, they might not have much information as there are only theories circulating at the moment. However, we’ll be leaving hints along the way, allowing fans and media outlets to speculate and attempt to decipher our intentions for this project. We can begin dropping these hints a bit earlier on.
CD Projekt has officially begun full-scale production on The Witcher 4, but the studio hasn’t yet revealed a timeline for when gameplay footage or trailers might be unveiled. According to the developers, The Witcher 4 will surpass both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of scale when it comes to its role-playing fantasy gameplay.
