Unreal Engine 6 Announced, First Real-Time Footage Showcased With Rocket League

Epic Games recently unveiled Unreal Engine 6 – the next version of its popular game engine – during the Rocket League Championship Series 2026: Paris Major. Surprisingly, the engine will first appear in Psyonix’s free-to-play game, Rocket League, almost six years after the launch of Unreal Engine 5.

A brief trailer showcasing actual gameplay reveals significant visual upgrades, including improved reflections, lighting, foliage, and special effects. While the footage wasn’t from a live match and there’s no news on when it will be released, it represents a huge step forward for Rocket League, which has been running on the older Unreal Engine 3 since its launch.

Epic Games will eventually move all of its popular franchises, like Fortnite and LEGO Fortnite, to Unreal Engine 6. According to CEO Tim Sweeney, this transition will be a key moment for the studio, merging the tools used to create Fortnite with the core Unreal Engine technology.

It’s still unclear how these developments will affect the creation of in-engine experiences and how simple they’ll be to build. Tim Sweeney suggested we might see early versions of Unreal Engine 6 around 2027 or 2028, noting the team is consistently making headway. Based on the recent preview, the engine seems to be progressing well and could potentially launch next year. We’ll have to wait and see, so keep an eye out for more news in the months ahead.
