Makoto Yukimura is an exceptionally talented manga artist, as evidenced by the acclaim of his historical epic “Vinland Saga.” This seinen series has been well-received since its publication in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2005 and later in Monthly Afternoon. Although “Vinland Saga” is truly remarkable, it isn’t Yukimura’s only outstanding work; however, until recently, it was the easiest for English readers to access.
On their main platform (previously known as Twitter), it was declared by Dark Horse Comics that they will soon publish a Deluxe Edition of the graphic novel Planetes, in the same 7″ x 10″ format as the recently launched Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition. The initial volume of this Deluxe Edition is scheduled for release on July 29th, 2025, priced at $49.99. Dark Horse Comics describes Planetes as follows: “Astronaut Hachimaki ‘Hachi’ Hoshino yearns to escape his renowned father’s shadow and join the Jupiter mission. For him, being an astronaut isn’t about exploration but rather cleaning up space… Through the hazardous and often unacknowledged job, Planetes reveals that those who soar among the stars lead lives filled with the intrigue of family, love, and ambition.
Starting this coming July, I’ll be witnessing the grand unveiling of a Deluxe Edition of Planetes, courtesy of Dark Horse Manga. This space-themed extravaganza is set to hit shelves in a stylish hardcover format (7″ x 10″). Here are the details:

Planetes, Despite Being Sci-Fi, Is an Out of This World Character Study
The manga “Planetes” exceptionally delves into the complexities of human thoughts and feelings when isolated from the world at large, as suggested by the publisher. Although it was published between 1999 and 2004, comprising four collected volumes, each character within its storyline is meticulously developed, demonstrating great attention to detail.
In Planetes, there’s no hesitation to portray a bleak future scenario for Earth and delve into the gritty details of what it means to be an astronaut within this series. The writing is profoundly moving and demonstrates that Yukimura possesses a unique ability to tackle intricate themes in his stories.
Planetes was the manga artist’s debut serial work following stints as an assistant to Shin Morimura (Manzai Highway, Aishiteru). Instead of focusing on the characters’ daily tasks of cleaning up space debris, he chose to emphasize their psychological aspects and personal lives. Tokyopop initially published the manga in English in 2003, and later Dark Horse Comics reissued it using the same translation in 2015. The forthcoming Deluxe Editions from Dark Horse, which will include a new English translation by Yuki Johnson, mark the first time the series has been reprinted in English in a decade.
