Jennifer Lopez couldn’t get right with her schedule.
Because of this, she wasn’t able to participate in the famous 2003 MTV VMAs performance of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin,” which also featured Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
“I was working on a movie, Shall We Dance, at the same time,” the 56-year-old explained to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live on June 8. “And they just wouldn’t let me out of the movie, but we rehearsed and everything. I went to Madonna’s house. It was me, her, and Britney.”
The singer, when asked about the famous kiss, confirmed that the three of them didn’t rehearse it beforehand.
Lopez shared that the person had explicitly stated her desire to marry, even outlining the wedding plans. She envisioned herself as the groom and requested that everyone present sing at the ceremony.
Christina Aguilera took the place of the Monster-in-Law actress for the performance, which is now considered one of the most iconic in VMA history.
Even though she wasn’t able to perform with Madonna back then, Jennifer Lopez still looks up to her as a major influence. She recently explained how Madonna, now 67, has shaped her own style and career.
The singer, known as “I’m Real,” shared on the social media show Track Star that she used to look up to a particular woman when she was growing up. She explained that this admiration led her to visit the woman’s neighborhood and try to copy her style, even going so far as to alter her own clothes to look just like her.
Looking at Madonna’s decades-long run as a pop star, Lopez aspires to transform in similar ways, saying, “I always said to myself, I never want to get stuck. I always wanted to keep evolving. I always wanna keep doing new things.”
