As a lifelong wrestling fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue and nostalgia watching the ongoing saga between CM Punk and Kevin Owens. Their history dates back to the early days of Ring of Honor, a time when both were rising stars in the independent circuit. The way they clashed then, with their heated exchanges and competitive spirit, is reminiscent of an old feud between two gladiators in the Colosseum.
CM Punk’s return to the WWE was not universally welcomed with enthusiasm. Known as the Second City Saint, he ended a nearly decade-long absence from the sports entertainment giant at the Survivor Series in November, making an appearance that resembled a post-credits scene for this premium live event. Footage captured by fans showed varying reactions from the talent on stage, with Randy Orton smiling and waving while Seth Rollins could be seen cursing Punk. Despite no reports of Punk’s issues in AEW affecting WWE behind the scenes, some talents still harbor pre-existing opinions about him.
Kevin Owens on CM Punk: “We’re Not Friends.”
The Prizefighter has no love for the self-proclaimed best in the world.
As I chatted with the Daily Mail, I made it clear that CM Punk and I aren’t pals in our everyday lives. However, should our paths cross professionally within a storyline, I’d certainly be open to discussing things with him then.
“Owens explained that there’s never any conversation between us. We don’t have a need to talk because we’re not friends. It’s simply not the case. I can’t quite put it into words. There’s no reason for us to talk, unless we need to collaborate on something. But in general, we don’t.”
The animosity between Owens and Punk dates back to their early days in professional wrestling. In the year 2005, Owens, then known as Kevin Steen, made his debut with Ring of Honor. At that time, Punk was one of ROH’s leading figures. Unhappy with his singlet attire, Owens requested permission from higher-ups to change his wrestling outfit into the sleeveless t-shirt style that would later become his signature look.
In response to Owens altering his wrestling gear, Punk expressed disagreement, challenging him publicly in front of the entire ROH locker room. This led to a sharp comment from Owens, which ignited Punk, ultimately causing him to humiliate Owens, with his fellow team members looking on.
For about a year more, Punk stayed with ROH before moving to WWE, whereas Owens climbed the ranks within WWE over the following decade. Signing with WWE in the summer of 2014, Owens joined shortly after Punk’s departure from the company. It wasn’t until the fall of 2023 that these two wrestlers would reunite on the same roster, but they continue to be on separate brands.
Today at 1 PM ET, Cody Rhodes’ WWE Championship is being contested by Owens, while Drew McIntyre faces off against Punk in a strap match at the WWE Bash in Berlin.
