007 First Light Developer Reveals Why They’re Telling Bond’s Origin Story

The creators of the upcoming game 007 First Light, which is highly anticipated for release next year, have shared some insights as to why they thought it was crucial to delve into James Bond’s backstory. With its long-awaited launch,

The film titled “007 First Light” was officially unveiled in June, complete with its first trailer and title disclosure. This confirms that the James Bond character portrayed will be younger than his counterparts in previous versions, a choice made for a significant reason: this isn’t just another Bond tale, it’s an origin story. So far, Bond’s life before he became 007 has not been explored on-screen. We get a fleeting glimpse of him earning the 007 status at the beginning of “Casino Royale,” but this is primarily to establish that Daniel Craig’s Bond is a more ruthless and rugged interpretation of the suave spy. In “007 First Light,” we will delve into James Bond’s entire transformation into 007, as well as gain insights into his childhood experiences.

007 First Light Developer Explains Why They’re Telling James Bond’s Origin Story

IO Interactive is keeping much of the details about 007 First Light under wraps, including the identity of the new James Bond actor, which they won’t reveal until later in the summer. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook’s Tanner Dedmon, 007 Franchise Director Jonathan Lacaille shared some insights on why they chose to portray a younger Bond (aged 26 in this game). The developers at IO Interactive are more interested in delving into the transformation of Bond into 007 rather than treating them as synonymous. While the character retains many beloved traits, the game focuses on teaching him how to effectively use these traits for his advantage.

In Lacaille’s words, “Bond is well-known for his movie portrayals, and when we chose to depict a younger Bond, we had to consider his characteristics and the transformation he underwent to become the figure we recognize today. Our version of Bond possesses traits that are less refined, such as his charisma and intelligence, but he hasn’t yet learned to use them tactically. He tends to act impulsively, which is somewhat reckless in the movies, but in our game, he’s more focused on achieving objectives, believing they are right, and often disregarding orders. He believes that the rightness of a situation justifies many actions, and M recognizes his potential.

A significant aspect involves making it appealing to a younger demographic, who might not have much experience with the films due to the franchise’s decreased release frequency in recent times. This could serve as an introduction to the series for them.

According to Lacaille, we aimed to make Bond feel more familiar since the majority of console users are aged between 25 – 35 and younger. To accomplish this, we decided to present Bond’s origin story as an introduction for those who recognize James Bond but aren’t overly acquainted with him. Showing the character in his youth makes it easier for people close in age to identify with a 26-year-old protagonist.

Although IO Interactive hasn’t officially commented on it, there are strong beliefs that Patrick Gibson, who played Dexter in “Dexter: Original Sin,” could be portraying James Bond in “007 First Light.” They share striking resemblances and voice similarities. However, we might receive definitive confirmation about this later in the year.
