007 First Light takes IO Interactive into the realm of James Bond, where they’re crafting an origin tale for a more youthful and audacious agent. But what caught many off guard was the unveiling of Casino Royale’s Le Chiffre, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, as a fresh Elusive Target in the Hitman World of Assassination series.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been wondering about the link between these games, but my curiosity was put to rest when senior Hitman level designer Martin Ansdal spoke with GamesRadar. In his interview, he made it clear that First Light exists in a “wholly unique universe” and there are no current plans for any crossover events.
In simpler terms, “The Bond you saw in ‘First Light’ is entirely new, as is the universe it’s set in. It seems they aim to create a Bond specifically for video games, which should be unique and unrelated to existing Bond universes. Therefore, there are currently no plans for any crossover events.
Ansdal pointed out that Le Chiffre originates from the Daniel Craig film series, making him incongruous with any universe linked to “First Light,” as it would cause unnecessary confusion regarding which universe we’re referring to.
Mads Mikkelsen could make a special appearance in the ‘World of Assassination’, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean a broader, interconnected narrative.
From a positive perspective, having Le Chiffre as a character allows the production team to be a bit more daring when designing an Elusive Target mission. Lately, they’ve demonstrated that Agent 47 could be poisoned upon accepting a drink from Le Chiffre and, if he couldn’t find the antidote in time, he would wake up in a torture chamber reminiscent of James Bond’s ordeal in Casino Royale.
There are certainly unconventional ways this project might conclude. I’m not merely trying to create ‘content.’ Instead, I strive for something extraordinary, something unique that you won’t find in other games. An adventure that can only be had here and nowhere else. For instance, you won’t find a game where you dress up as a flamingo and use a banana peel to trip up Le Chiffre, now will you?
In the game “Hitman World” of Assassins, you can access The Elusive Target until July 6th. This special mission rewards you with something for the upcoming game “007 First Light,” which is scheduled to launch in 2026 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
