In anime, there are characters who receive the expected backlash from viewers, such as Malty Melromarc from “The Rising of the Shield Hero” and Shou Tucker in “Fullmetal Alchemist”. However, there are also characters who are less obvious about their wrongdoings or are surprisingly popular despite their morally questionable actions. Regardless, these characters, regardless of their current level of unpopularity, deserve a fresh look at just how deserving they are of criticism.
These characters often exhibit a variety of unpleasant traits, ranging from slightly dull like uninteresting white bread that fails to contribute significantly on its own, to truly detestable ones that leave an offensive taste in one’s mouth, worse than eating a dish made of cat-urine-soaked durian and rotten balut eggs. Regardless of the type of character, they are not typically worthy of admiration or empathy. Instead, they often warrant more criticism in general.
1) Kazuya Kinoshita from Rent-a-Girlfriend
In the anime called “Rent-a-Girlfriend“, the main character, Kazuya Kinoshita, fits the typical mold you’d expect. He’s been unsuccessful in love and is often referred to as a loser. Despite managing a one-month relationship in the past, it ended in heartbreak. In an attempt to fill this void, Kazuya decides to rent a girlfriend. However, things become complicated when he tries to make the charade feel more real than it initially appears, and his temporary girlfriend, Chizuru Ichinose, struggles to maintain her job’s secrecy.
Despite the fact that it’s predictable that Kazuya’s chosen solution won’t effectively address his problem, it’s astonishingly naive of him to persist in believing that such a hastily conceived strategy won’t lead to an escalation of issues over time.
2) Rudeus Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei
Terrible beyond belief, almost incomprehensibly awful. The narrative might imply a possibility of redemption, but it’s clearly not the case. Despite having been granted a second chance, Rudeus continues to act despicably, demonstrating appalling behavior throughout his second life as well.
I’d find it more reasonable if he occasionally stumbled upon relatable errors, ones he’d eventually feel remorse for and strive to correct. But what troubles me is his persistent pattern of making appalling decisions that, in reality, would lead to severe consequences such as ostracism, warranting a life sentence in prison alongside fellow convicts who, quite frankly, might find such an outrageous degenerate so repulsive that they’d contemplate taking his life, if you catch my drift.
3) Kokoro from Darling in the Franxx
Kokoro is a character who masks her guilt behind an appearance of timidity. Many people believe Futoshi coerced Kokoro into a lifelong partnership commitment, but the truth lies with Kokoro for not expressing her reservations and misleading him. It’s important to remember that teamwork relies on open communication, particularly when, or more importantly, when, the partnership encounters opposing objectives.
From my perspective, being Futoshi’s initial companion, Kokoro failed to uphold her duty by engaging with Futoshi on an equal footing about her genuine emotions towards Mitsuru. Even though Kokoro’s feelings for Mitsuru may have appeared sudden and unexpected even to the viewers, it was an even greater shock to poor Futoshi – not just in his romantic relationship but also in his lifetime commitment as a Parasite, as this sudden change turned his world upside down.
4) Nina from Berserk
Even though very few supporters might argue for her defense given the lack of enthusiasm for the 2016 adaptation (it’s safe to say it didn’t win many fans), Nina has largely earned all the unfavorable attention. Her actions, which may appear weak and pitiful on the surface, have demonstrated a deceitful and unwise nature.
Initially, Nina appears as if she’s a person who’s had a tough break in life, working as a prostitute and unable to be with the man who loves her unless he’s prepared to make some significant compromises. However, it later becomes clear that this situation is more literal than he initially thought, as she doesn’t hesitate to guide him towards his doom by involving him in the cult she belongs to. Nina is incredibly self-centered and fearful, and her character, much like her condition, remains stuck in a cycle of uselessness that only serves to deepen her degradation.
5) Mari Iscariot from Rebuild of Evangelion
From another perspective, given her existing level of unpopularity, it could be argued that she warrants even greater contempt. Her role in the Rebuild film series seems primarily destructive, undermining the rich tapestry of lore and deep-rooted character dynamics that Anno carefully crafted as the foundation for the storyline’s coherence and depth.
Instead of having profound, spiritual links with the Evas due to their unique secrets about their identity, operation, and the significance of sync ratios, Mari views them as mere trinkets to discard. This careless attitude towards the Evas mirrors her casual relationships with others, including Shinji. Labeling a resolution involving Mari as crucial to Shinji’s character growth as “heartwarming” seems inappropriate when considering that Mari herself is expendable and lacks depth.
6) Kagari Shiina from Steins;Gate 0
In essence, Kagari’s role in the story is mostly a decoy, or a misleading clue without much relevance to a major plot development. Although she does betray her companions, they didn’t have a close relationship with her initially. Furthermore, Kagari herself was not well-defined, making any similarity to Kurisu seem insignificant and coincidental. The supposed twist linking Kagari to Mayuri doesn’t add much depth or originality to the main narrative.
7) Hayase Nagatoro from Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro
People often find that first impressions can be misleading, but this girl seems to perpetuate any negative assumptions about herself. Upon meeting Naoto Hachiouji, Nagatoro immediately begins teasing and harassing him so persistently that he cries, all without understanding who he is. Essentially, she’s the one who starts mocking a man who’s simply trying to go about his day in peace. If someone can behave so disrespectfully towards complete strangers with impunity, it suggests her general attitude towards others might not be very kind. In essence, Nagatoro’s main characteristic could be described as being rather rude or mean-spirited.
8) Kun Ota from Mirai
As a bystander, I must admit that Kun’s behavior is understandable given his young age as he navigates the complexities of being an older sibling. However, from a more casual perspective, Kun bears some resemblance to the universally disliked cartoon character, Caillou. He seems to whine frequently, argue often, and struggles to show affection towards his little sister. While Kun is undeniably less annoying than Caillou, his behavior can still test one’s patience and listening abilities.
9) Delia Ketchum from Pokémon
It appears that Ash’s mother, Delia, plays a more active role in his life and offers support compared to some other anime moms. However, she has her share of oversights, such as sending her 10-year-old son out into potentially hazardous situations with just a new pet that dislikes him, a bag full of fresh underwear, and dreams. Ash is also pursued by an entire criminal organization, yet Delia remains unaware. Furthermore, it’s questionable who Ash’s real father is, and many suspect that the trip to the beach with Professor Oak was not just for a “tour group.
10) Miki Kawai from A Silent Voice
Miki Kawai, like Kokoro from Darling in the Franxx, falls into the category of cunning adversaries who mask their true selves. Beneath her peaceful and humble exterior lies a self-centered and duplicitous personality. Despite appearing innocent, caring, and responsible, she is actually quite haughty and deceitful. When Miki saw Shoko Nishimiya being bullied in class, instead of standing up against the bullying, she joined forces with the bullies and pinned the blame on Shoya Ishida, absolving herself of any personal accountability or wrongdoing. In reality, Miki perceives herself as a victim, going to great lengths to avoid taking responsibility for her actions.
