As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of anime, I must say that Dandadan has truly stolen my heart with its unique blend of humor, suspense, and heart-wrenching moments. One of the most impactful episodes for me was undeniably Acrobatic Silky’s backstory (Episode 7).
Without a doubt, “Dandadan” stands out as the standout anime of the current season. Originating from the manga by Yukino Tatsu and animated by Science SARU, the storyline of “Dandadan” is nothing short of extraordinary. Following the loss of his family heirlooms to the malevolent spirit known as Turbo Granny, Okarun teams up with his new psychic companion Momo in a quest to retrieve his Kintama. As they progress, they encounter menacing aliens and unsettling spirits. Surprisingly, given its premise of “a teenager losing his testicles,” “Dandadan” has resonated deeply with viewers, making it the epitome of 2024 anime.
It’s fortunate that the anime series, “Dandadan“, delivers on its unpredictable storyline with some truly remarkable sequences. Not a single episode in Season 1 was less than exceptional – even the weakest one is still impressive according to standard measures. Trying to pick out the top moments in “Dandadan” is almost impossible, but here we go, with Turbo Granny as our guide!
10. Turbo Granny Enjoys Campus Life
University scholars ought to investigate the weakening of Turbo Granny’s abilities. After deceiving Momo and Okarun, it was Okarun who inadvertently took on all her power. This ability enables him to transform whenever he wishes, while she is left powerless. In a bid to flee from Seiko, she infuses her spirit with a mystical cat that seems to beckon for help.
In Episode 6, viewers witness more of the feline version of Turbo Granny than her spirit form, as she aids Okarun in locating his lost Kintama in exchange for regaining her powers. In this episode, the mischievous Cat Turbo Granny slips into Okarun’s bag and proceeds to rummage through his school while he, quite literally, flees from his feelings towards Momo.
9. Jiji Joins the Fight
As Dandadan unfolds with Momo and Okarun’s bond deepening, we encounter a few amusing sidekicks. Among them, Aira brings some humor, but it’s Jiji who steals the show as the most entertaining secondary character.
In Episode 11, we meet Jiji properly for the first time. Being Momo’s long-time friend and her earliest crush, Okarun initially perceives him as a threat. However, in an unexpected twist, it turns out that Jiji is not as smart as he seems – quite the contrary, he’s rather foolish. Jiji exhibits traits of narcissism, immaturity, and high energy levels. Despite having just two complete episodes in Season 1, it’s clear that Jiji will play a significant role in the upcoming seasons.
8. The Flatwoods Monster
The second installment of “Dandadan” presents a notably somber atmosphere, with shadows dominating the scene. During this episode, Momo escorts Okarun to meet Grandma Seiko, but their journey is interrupted by a colossal extraterrestrial who appears to be fond of sumo wrestling.
The enigmatic Flatwoods Creature poses an early threat to the adventure of Okarun and Momo. Swathed in shadows, the Flatwoods Monster compels Momo and Okarun to harness their abilities just to endure. The breathtaking battle sequence challenges them to their very core.
7. Jiji’s Evil Eye Flashback
Although primarily focusing on mischievous yokai spirits and extraterrestrials fascinated by human physiology, Dandadan seldom feels truly frightening. Yet, a scene from Episode 11 comes remarkably close to being so. In this instance, the character of Jiji, Momo’s long-time acquaintance known for his foolish behavior, takes a momentary pause from his exaggerated actions to share the reason behind his stay with Momo and Seiko.
Following their household relocation, Jiji started observing peculiar activities within their fresh dwelling. Just prior to his parents’ admission into the hospital, Jiji encountered the spectral entity Evil Eye in the hallway. Contrasting the cheerful and vibrant scenes that preceded, this flashback takes on a somber, foreboding tone, almost as if it were plucked from a Junji Ito comic book.
6. Earthbound Spirit Crab Chase
In a 12-episode Shonen anime blending aliens and yokai spirits, Dandadan doesn’t offer an abundance of action. However, the action scenes it does present are simply stunning.
2024 saw some breathtaking action sequences, but none quite matched the heart-pounding excitement of the Earthbound Spirit Crab chase in Episode 4! As Momo and Okarun returned to Turbo Granny’s tunnel, they unwittingly found themselves ensnared by her trickery. But with Okarun now armed with incredible new abilities, we managed to escape the clutches of the towering crustacean – sprinting across the bustling highway and darting into the heart of the city! Accompanied by a moving score, this scene was nothing short of an exhilarating rollercoaster ride that had me on the edge of my seat!
5. Momo and Okarun’s First “Kiss”
Amidst supernatural threats, mysterious extraterrestrials, and lost family heirlooms, the anime titled “Dandadan” revolves around the burgeoning relationship between Okarun and Momo. Across 12 episodes, spectators witness their mutual affection gradually unfolding, as neither character is able to express their deepening feelings openly.
However, in Episode 5, the chemistry between them ignites when they almost kiss… well, almost. Throughout the episode, they were on a quest to find each other, and their heads accidentally collided, causing their lips to touch. This was the closest they’ve come to a romantic moment in Season 1, but by Episode 12, it became clear that Okarun still cherished those feelings deep within his heart.
4. Dandadan X Shin Godzilla
Previously mentioned, in a fight scene, Dandadan leaves no stone unturned. In Episode 9, Momo, Okarun, and Aira are captives of the Serpo Aliens and their mercenary, Mr. Mantis Shrimp. To make matters worse, they must confront Dandadan’s equivalent of Shin Godzilla.
In the anime, the creature known as Nessie bears resemblance to the well-known Scottish monster legend, but its appearance in the show leans more towards a Godzilla-like figure, capable of emitting atomic breath. The chase sequence involving Spirit Crab in Episode 9 is visually stunning, as our heroes find themselves battling a mutated version of Nessie within their submerged school.
3. Creepy Nuts’ “Otonoke” OP
Is it considered unfair to include an anime’s opening theme in a Top 10 Best Moments list? In the case of Dandadan, we don’t worry about that rule. The latest track, “Otonoke,” by Creepy Nuts, has ignited an unmatched enthusiasm among fans online with its unprecedented fire.
Should the catchy tune not secure a spot on the list, the visually appealing opening credits with their pop culture references truly shine. These credits effectively present the main characters while masterfully embodying the series’ whimsical mood and the foolishness of its four lead characters.
2. Turbo Granny’s Introduction
In another words, how would the story of Dandadan unfold without Turbo Granny? Initially, this character is portrayed as a significant adversary, snatching Okarun’s treasures and scattering them nationwide. However, her circumstances take a turn when she ends up being trapped inside a beckoning cat figurine, leading to her transformation into a reliable ally.
In Episode 1, a memorable scene featuring Okarun, also known as Turbo Granny, stands out. Determined to disprove Momo’s beliefs about spirits, she ventures into an abandoned tunnel. The tension builds, the visuals are stunning, and the line “I’ll let you nurse from my breasts, so let me eat that sausage” has become a classic in anime lore – made even more significant due to being voiced by Mayumi Tanaka, who is famous for her role as Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece.
1. Acrobatic Silky’s Backstory
It came as a surprise that the anime series Dandadan would move grown viewers to tears, especially in its seventh episode. In episode 6, we were introduced to the character named Acrobatic Silky, a spirit who developed an unhealthy attachment towards Aira, viewing her as a surrogate daughter. However, episode 7 managed to turn Acrobatic Silky from a major antagonist into the most compassionate villain of the year in anime.
During the action scenes, we’re treated to glimpses of Acrobatic Silky’s past as a human. In her youth, she juggled numerous jobs to support her daughter. However, when criminals invaded her home, assaulted her, and kidnapped her child, she embarked on a long journey to retrieve her. Stricken by her injuries, she transformed into Acrobatic Silky, now perpetually seeking her lost daughter. This heart-wrenching tale elevated Episode 7 to the peak of excellence in Dandadan Season 1.
