As a lifelong gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can confidently say that the list presented is nothing short of a treasure trove for any screenwriter or producer worth their salt. Each game offers a unique narrative, rich characters, and visually stunning landscapes that would translate beautifully onto the small or big screen.
It’s clear that video games have left their mark on the entertainment world. Titles like “The Last of Us,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” and “Fallout” have moved into film and television, receiving acclaim from gamers and critics alike. Now we find “Tomb Raider” in its third adaptation, with Sophie Turner, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” stepping into the shoes of Lara Croft.
As a cinephile with a keen interest in gaming, I’ve compiled a list of video games that could potentially shine on the silver screen or small screen. These titles have stirred intrigue within the industry, but for one reason or another, their adaptations were halted or shelved before they could fully blossom into major intellectual properties. Perhaps, given another chance, they’d find success as blockbuster movies or critically acclaimed TV series?
Heavy Rain
Nothing screams suspense (or Jason) quite like the action-adventure title Heavy Rain. The game follows four different characters (Ethan, Norman, Madison, Scott) whose lives are at the hands of the player’s decision. While that choice wouldn’t be in your hands as a TV show or film, it would be interesting to see how someone else pulls the strings to solving the mystery of the Origami Killer. Seeing how MAX has been taking on darker crime shows, a Heavy Rain miniseries would be an interesting way of exploring this world.
Killzone
The video game series “Killzone” by Guerrilla Games is almost prepared for a transition into television. The storyline takes place in the year 2357 and revolves around two human factions – the Vektans and the Helghast – who are engaged in a fierce war over the planet of Vekta, with the former defending their land while the latter seeks to reclaim it. The show will focus on a high-ranking officer named Jan Templar and his team as they are dispatched to Vekta on a mission to find someone who knows how to dismantle the oppressive Helghast regime, similar to the style of “Band of Brothers” but set in space and infused with political intrigue.
Splinter Cell
The video game “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell” has long been calling out for adaptation ever since its release. In this narrative, we follow Sam Fisher, a stealthy black-ops agent belonging to the secretive “Third Echelon,” as he navigates the shadows to eliminate his formidable adversaries, who are some of the most vile individuals on the planet. Although it might be premature to bring up this topic given that the movie adaptation starring Tom Hardy has been cancelled, a film adaptation of “Splinter Cell” could undoubtedly make its mark in the espionage thriller genre. Imagine a blend of “Zero Dark Thirty” with a raw and edgy vibe; moreover, the lighting aspects crucial to the game could result in an extraordinary visual experience.
Ico
Movies similar to “A Quiet Place” have managed to create an exceptionally engaging experience in cinemas, and “Ico”, with its sparse design, could replicate this immersion if adapted. The narrative revolves around Ico, a character with horns who lives as an outcast, encountering a captive girl whom he intends to free from a castle under the control of an evil queen. Since there’s minimal dialogue, understanding the characters would be an engaging challenge through their actions alone. Moreover, the visuals, featuring mountainous and castle landscapes, would undoubtedly be breathtaking. Building this world for a potential franchise would showcase exceptional skill.
Infamous
Examining the contemporary backdrop, younger main characters, and ethical quandaries surrounding power utilization in the Infamous universe offers intriguing perspectives on storytelling. The initial installment follows Cole MacGrath, who acquires electricity-based powers after being enveloped by an explosion in Empire City. Whether he chooses to employ his abilities for benevolent or malicious purposes depends on him. Subsequent episodes tackle similar ethical dilemmas while introducing various powers and talents – this diversity provides a foundation for a superhero TV series, the central theme of which revolves around the exploration of power’s employment.
Metro
In today’s era, shows set in post-apocalyptic landscapes are gaining traction, and that’s exactly where the Metro series seems to thrive, no matter its location. This Russian production, inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel Metro 2033, portrays a world ravaged by nuclear war, with survivors seeking refuge in the Metro tunnels and scavenging for items untouched by radiation. After an assault by mutated creatures known as the Dark Ones, the protagonist Artyom embarks on a mission to identify those responsible and journey through Moscow to vanquish them. This gripping horror-infused dystopian narrative is reminiscent of the type HBO would appreciate.
Metroid Prime
In the world of the Alien series, there’s a recurring theme of fear stemming from the unfathomable mysteries of space. But have you ever managed to conquer those fears while donning a battle suit? The game, Metroid Prime, introduces Samus Aran, a lone bounty hunter, who embarks on a mission to combat space pirates and their genetically-altered creatures on the planet Tallon IV. This adventure is rich in exploration, offering encounters with various formidable alien adversaries. Given that Samus operates independently (in a first-person perspective), it could provide an exceptional platform for an actress to shine. With Marvel successfully utilizing in-helmet face-capture technology for Iron Man, Metroid Prime could blend elements of space odyssey and claustrophobia-inducing suspense. As we witness Samus’ armor undergoing immense duress, the game could transform into a thrilling mix of cosmic adventure and confined-space tension.
Shadow of the Colossus
If you found Ico intriguing, don’t miss its spiritual successor, Shadow of the Colossus. It shares the same boy-meets-girl narrative structure, but introduces enormous titan-like creatures that must be defeated in challenging battles. The game revolves around a character named Wander, who is on a quest to revive a girl called Mono. This can only be achieved by defeating sixteen colossal monsters scattered across an isolated and deserted landscape. Ever since its release, gamers have been eager for this title to be adapted into a movie – and it’s just the kind of world that a studio like Amazon could transform into the next Fallout.
Jak and Daxter
Naughty Dog could potentially bring another one of their video game franchises to life on the big screen. The game, “Jak and Daxter,” features a mute teenager who works to help his friend, Daxter, return to human form. This series is set in a dystopian fantasy future that could resonate with both young and older audiences if adapted for film. The relationship between Jak and Daxter offers an intriguing dynamic that could be developed further in a movie series. It’s also been suggested that Tom Holland has expressed interest in playing the role of Jak, leading some to speculate that a movie might soon be underway.
Portal
In a different phrasing: If the cake weren’t deceitful, we would all be savoring it. Portal could significantly contribute to the psychological horror genre and might even be developed by either an independent studio or a major gaming company. The game focuses on Chell who navigates through numerous puzzles within the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, using a portal gun. The struggle between AI and humans in the game is unsettling, considering the reliance one must place on something with its own consciousness.
What do you think about adapting some timeless video games from the 2000s era for television or film? Do you have any other recommendations?
