The combination of Batman and gadgets is as fitting as that of chocolate and peanut butter. Typically, even the villains that plague Batman are equipped with some form of advanced technology for their nefarious plans. Although every incarnation of the Caped Crusader has had a fair share of crime-fighting tools, some are more heavily armed than others. Notably, Batman: The Animated Series, which is often considered the best representation of the World’s Greatest Detective by many fans, was relatively light on gadgets. However, when Batman and his enemies did utilize specialized devices, they were always high-quality.
Swinging from classics such as the Batarang to cutting-edge devices, Batman: The Animated Series offered a satisfying assortment of utility belt gadgets that appealed to bat-enthusiasts, all while emphasizing that Batman’s most potent weapon is his intellect. Diving headfirst into the show’s arsenal, we have carefully selected our top 10 favorite gadgets from Batman: The Animated Series, and here they are in no specific order.
1) Bola
As a devoted cinephile, I’d like to share a fascinating insight about the gear of one of my favorite characters: Batman. Contrary to popular belief, not every tool in his arsenal is cutting-edge technology. Some, such as the bolas wielded by various members of the Bat-family, are astonishingly basic. Hailing from South America, these weapons date back centuries and consist of a simple rope tied to three weighted balls.
In their original form, bolas were a hunting tool used in primal times. Yet, despite their ancient roots, they remain just as effective today, as they did when the Mapuche people employed them against the Chilean Army in the late 1800s. These non-lethal weapons are a testament to the power of simplicity and ingenuity, demonstrating that sometimes, the most effective tools are those with the fewest moving parts.
Regardless if the opponent is a cowboy’s livestock or one of the Joker’s henchmen, a well-placed lasso throw (bola) at the right moment is an effective method for bringing a fleeing adversary to a halt.
2) Batcomputer
At the opposite extreme, we find Batman’s state-of-the-art device known as the batcomputer. Although most iterations of Batman possess a batcomputer, none are quite as elaborate as the one showcased in Batman: The Animated Series. This is primarily because animation offers certain benefits over live-action, such as the ability for animators to design whatever they imagine without having to construct it physically.
In awe, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer scale and versatility of Batman: The Animated Series’ batcomputer. It’s a technological wonder, capable of executing tasks as diverse as the script demands. While we understand that the batcomputer occasionally functions as a plot device, its cool factor remains undiminished.
3) Wrist-Mounted Crossbow
In contrast to typical portrayals of Poison Ivy, the one from ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ is often seen with a crossbow attached to her arm. This unique trait adds to her intimidating presence, and it seems writer Paul Dini thought it was a fitting accessory for her character. Her wrist-mounted crossbow can fire multiple darts quickly before needing reloading, making it a formidable part of an arsenal that also includes mind-controlling pheromones and lethal plant life.
4) Grapple Gun
Over the years, DC comics were hesitant to feature Batman with a grappling hook launcher because of his no-guns rule. However, Batman: The Animated Series found a loophole by designing a grapple gun that didn’t resemble a firearm. This device was shaped like an uppercase “T,” and it had a handle with a thumb-activated trigger. Inside the straight shaft, the folded-up hook and cable were hidden.
The grapple gun enhanced Batman’s agility and could also serve as a defensive or offensive tool on occasion. This was due to its electric cable, capable of delivering a powerful shock strong enough to dislodge a car door.
5) Mind Control Chips
While the Mad Hatter may not rank among Batman’s top villains, we’d confidently compare his mind control technology with the Joker’s laughing gas or Scarecrow’s fear toxin. The Hatter employs a chip, often connected to a 10/6 card, which enables him to completely dominate another person’s thoughts using his control headband.
As a captivated observer, I must confess that this remarkable device could undeniably grant the Mad Hatter dominion over Gotham. However, in a charming twist, the enchanting rogue, who shares an unparalleled passion for “Alice in Wonderland”, often employs it to orchestrate whimsical role-play scenarios reminiscent of Lewis Carroll’s beloved novel.
6) Batmobile
Ever since Batman first graced our screens, the Batmobile has been my go-to ride. It’s not just one high-tech gadget, but a whole arsenal of them, making it the ultimate Swiss Army knife among fictional vehicles. Even James Bond’s Aston Martin takes a back seat to this incredible machine! The Batmobile from Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) is equipped with smoke and oil dispensers, a massive grappling hook, and a driver’s seat that can transform into a batglider when needed.
Similar to the Batcomputer, the Batmobile makes use of its cartoon form by appearing strikingly elongated and threatening, based on the perspective from which it’s depicted. While it may not be the most eye-catching Batmobile design in existence, it undeniably ranks as the coolest overall.
7) Vertigo Eyepatch
People seldom mention the power to make others dizzy when discussing favorite superpowers like flight or super strength, but as Count Vertigo demonstrates, disorientating enemies so severely they must crawl on the ground is a highly effective tactic for a villain. The source of Vertigo’s powers lies in a patch over one eye that causes dizziness, enabling him to perform criminal activities, attack his disoriented adversaries, or use firearms freely.
In just a single episode of “Batman: The Animated Series,” the disorienting eyepatch known as Vertigo made its mark, earning a spot among these notable items due to its unsettling effect.
8) Utility Belt
Including Batman’s utility belt in this list might appear like taking an easy shortcut, but when discussing “Batman: The Animated Series,” the belt deserves special recognition on its own. Besides holding standard gadgets such as a gas mask, torch cutter, bolas, caltrops, and so forth, it also conceals remote controls for both the Batboat and the Batmobile. Moreover, the animated version of Batman’s utility belt is equipped with a protective system involving an enigmatic pink mist that disperses when anyone tries to interfere with the belt or its items.
9) Freeze Gun
In most versions of Mr. Freeze, he carries a large, menacing-looking yet impractical two-handed ice cannon. However, in “Batman: The Animated Series”, they chose to go with a more sinister-looking pistol that resembles the real-world Mauser C96, which is similar to Han Solo’s DL-44 blaster in “Star Wars”.
The Animated Series” had all the capabilities of larger models, but it was more streamlined and ergonomically designed. What’s more, it could be easily handled with just one hand. It’s not surprising that this portrayal of Mr. Freeze is frequently seen as the most iconic representation of the character.
10) Batarang
Much like the boomerang, the everyday batarang is among Batman’s fundamental devices, often found in his utility belt. Shaped like a bat, this seemingly basic tool proves deceptively versatile for The Dark Knight. By adjusting how he throws it, Batman can employ his batarang to disarm an adversary, knock them unconscious, or in dire situations, use it as a hand-thrown grappling hook by attaching a rope to it.
