Disney movies have significantly impacted the lives of children globally, yet many fans might not know this: all Disney movies are part of a single, interconnected universe. Although Disney hasn’t had an Avengers-style crossover with all its characters, there are enough Easter egg references and connections between animated films that confirm at least ten of them take place in the same cinematic world.
Check out this list of Disney movies and their connections to each other! By the end, you’ll be able to dazzle your friends with your knowledge of these fantastic films!
For example, did you know that “The Little Mermaid” is connected to “Aladdin”? Both movies feature magical objects (the trident and the lamp) that are crucial to their stories. And speaking of magic, “Beauty and the Beast” shares a connection with “Mulan,” as they both involve transformations – Belle falls in love with a beast, while Mulan saves China from invading forces and gains respect from her family.
So go ahead, explore these Disney connections, and become the ultimate Disney movie expert among your friends!
REMARK: The following review focuses on Disney’s animated movies, as the Disney-Pixar productions generally reside in a distinct and interconnected universe of their own.
Tarzan
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t forget the moment in the 1999 Disney animation, Tarzan, where Rosie O’Donnell’s character Terk, the witty gorilla, gets his hands on Minnie Driver’s safari-brought tea set – oddly enough, it turns out to be the same magical French tea set from Beauty and the Beast. This little detail suggests that these two Disney films share a common universe.
Peter Pan
As a dedicated Disney enthusiast, I recently stumbled upon an intriguing coincidence linking Disney’s 1953 animated film “Peter Pan” with the “Little Mermaid” series. In the former, Peter and his companions spot three mermaids; interestingly, in Disney’s 2008 direct-to-video prequel to “The Little Mermaid,” titled “Ariel’s Beginning,” a flashback is shown explaining the death of Ariel’s mother, Queen Athena. This incident occurred when a pirate ship crashed into a lagoon where the merpeople were swimming. Fans couldn’t help but notice that Queen Athena bore a striking resemblance to the older version of the young red-haired mermaid from “Peter Pan.” This discovery has sparked many questions among fans about who was at the helm of that pirate ship responsible for Queen Athena’s demise.
Beauty and the Beast
In a previous explanation, we discussed how the enchanted tea set from “Beauty and the Beast” found its way into “Tarzan”. However, that’s not the only instance where “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) connects with other Disney films. The main character, Belle, appears in a subsequent Disney animated production, extending her impact throughout this connected universe.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Indeed, in one of the early scenes from Disney’s 1996 animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” you might find Belle, the character from “Beauty and the Beast,” casually wandering around Notre Dame while engrossed in a book. It turns out that Disney’s animated universe is quite compact!
The Little Mermaid
In a shared universe, Ariel’s mother’s story intertwines with that of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, yet the initial animated version of The Little Mermaid has ignited numerous theories about its connections within the Disney realm. One intriguing theory suggests that the sunken ship Ariel discovers early in the film is not an ordinary vessel, but rather the ship of King Agnarr and Queen Iduna from Frozen – the couple who tragically perished at sea, leaving Elsa and Anna orphaned. However, those involved with Frozen have dismissed this theory, and Frozen II confirmed the true identity of their ship. Nonetheless, this idea continues to resonate and spark debate among new generations of Disney enthusiasts.
Hercules
In relation to “The Little Mermaid,” astute Disney enthusiasts have spotted a connection between King Triton, Ariel’s father, and Zeus, the main character from the 1998 animated film “Hercules.” King Triton’s character can be seen as a representation of Neptune/Poseidon, the Sea God and brother of Zeus in Greek mythology. This suggests that Ariel and Hercules could be cousins, given this family tie. Furthermore, both characters embark on adventures that culminate in their decisions to prioritize love over power in their respective stories, showcasing a striking similarity between the two royal offspring.
Tangled
The animated film “Tangled,” which is Disney’s version of the Rapunzel story, serves as a connection to another well-known Disney movie. A significant crossover moment happens in “Frozen” when Princess Anna welcomes guests to her castle, and it’s evident that Rapunzel and Eugene from “Tangled” are among the visitors. This appearance sparked various fan theories suggesting that “Tangled” and “Frozen” take place in the same universe. These theories delve deep into a web of connections, even proposing that the King and Queen of Arendelle were on their way to Rapunzel’s wedding when their ship sank, only for Ariel to later discover it, linking all three Disney Princesses. However, much of this theory has been disproven.
Moana
The initial Moana film follows Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s character, Maui, as he endeavors to recover his enchanted fish hook to regain his complete demigod abilities. Once retrieved, Maui must figure out how to utilize his transformation skills. However, during his attempt to transform into a shark, he inadvertently assumes the form of Sven, the reindeer from Frozen, instead. This suggests that these contemporary Disney masterpieces, Moana and Frozen, share the same universe.
Encanto
In the movie Disney’s Encanto, there’s a subtle tribute to Frozen. This wink suggests that both films share the same (musical) world. Towards the end of Encanto, when Bruno returns home, he sings a song of apology with a part dedicated to his sister Pepa. Given that Pepa can manipulate the weather, Bruno includes the lines “Let it snow / Let it go” in his song. This phrase is reminiscent of Frozen’s popular musical number, “Let It Go,” as the melody briefly echoes this iconic tune for a moment.
Frozen
Drawing upon the enchanting threads of storytelling from films like Tangled, Moana, Encanto (not forgetting hints of The Little Mermaid), it’s undeniable that Frozen holds a pivotal position as a pillar in Disney’s interconnected narrative tapestry. As a captivated viewer, I can attest to its significant role within this magical cinematic universe.
