One captivating feature of Akira Toriyama’s is that Goku forges friendships with a diverse array of remarkable characters during his numerous journeys. Piccolo is among the franchise’s key figures, having a complex history marked by a selfless transformation that rivals Vegeta in impact. Weighed down by his father’s transgressions and his own malevolent deeds, Piccolo transforms this burden into rigorous training and deep meditation.
In the grand world of Dragon Ball Super, I’ve noticed that Piccolo, unlike many others, doesn’t frequently exhibit expansive Super Saiyan transformations. However, his importance is undeniable, whether we’re talking about raw power, unique skills, or strategic prowess.
Recently, Piccolo has been given a well-deserved spotlight with his lead role in the Super Hero Saga, the introduction of his Orange Piccolo transformation, and his presence in Dragon Ball DAIMA. Nevertheless, some of his most captivating moments are found in Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 81, “Déjà Vu”
In the world of Dragon Ball, fusion has emerged as a highly favored battle tactic that allows two characters to combine their strengths and abilities into a more powerful fighter. Prior to the introduction of the Metamoran fusion dance and Potara Earrings, it was unveiled that Namekians possess their unique methods of fusion and division. Piccolo experiences this process with Nail, the strongest warrior on Planet Namek, which significantly enhances his power to confront Frieza. Unfortunately, Gohan, Vegeta, and Krillin are unable to counter Frieza’s second form or his overwhelming power level of one million.
In the epic saga of Dragon Ball Z, Piccolo fearlessly takes his place on the battlefield, convinced he can not only withstand Frieza but outright defeat him single-handedly. This remarkable display of power raises the question of whether it should be categorized as “Super Namekian.” Although Piccolo’s valiant efforts don’t result in Frieza’s downfall, it is Gohan who steps in to save his mentor when Frieza metamorphoses once more. Despite the outcome, Piccolo’s daring demonstration of strength leaves a lasting impression and is incredibly awe-inspiring.
Dragon Ball Z, Movie 4, “Lord Slug”
Dragon Ball Z boasts over a dozen films, each introducing some truly iconic villains. The series has a penchant for Saiyans, Androids, and Demons, but it’s the fourth feature film, Lord Slug, that unleashes an evil Namekian onto the planet. While Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug may not be one of its stronger movies, it doesn’t reflect poorly on Lord Slug himself. On the contrary, this film serves to highlight just how dangerous a Namekian can become when their powers are misused. Piccolo proves instrumental in assisting Goku during this ordeal, and a significant weakness within the Namekians is exposed.
Namekians seem to be affected by high-pitched sounds, like whistling, which turns out to be beneficial for the heroes against Lord Slug. However, there’s a worry that this tactic might harm Piccolo as well. In the heat of battle, Piccolo bravely removes his ears so Goku and Gohan can proceed with their strategy. It’s quite an astonishing sight, yet it showcases Piccolo’s unique ability to regenerate in a creative manner.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 259, “Trapped In Forever”
One amusing and ridiculous conflict that unfolds during the Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z involves Gotenks’ frequent comedic clashes with Buu. A notable battle takes place within the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Gotenks unleashes a barrage of explosive spirits from his Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack. Despite Gotenks’ impressive performance, Buu’s regenerative abilities are far too extensive. Convinced that they lack the strength to defeat Buu, Piccolo rashly demolishes the Hyperbolic Time Chamber’s door. As this is the sole entrance and exit to this dimensional pocket, the trio of warriors find themselves trapped within the Hyperbolic Time Chamber indefinitely.
While it may seem excessive, this tactic is quite clever as it showcases Piccolo’s willingness to sacrifice himself for the planet’s sake, even if that means spending eternity in purgatory. However, the power of Gotenks and Super Buu proves too great, allowing them to overcome the issue with apparent invincibility. If Dragon Ball Z had chosen a different path, this could have been an appropriate end for Buu.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 5, “Gohan’s Rage”
Dragon Ball Z takes place five years after the conclusion of Dragon Ball and Goku’s victory over Piccolo at the 23rd World Tournament. Despite their rivalry, these two maintain a deep animosity towards each other, with Piccolo reportedly working on an ultimate attack that could potentially kill Goku during this time. Interestingly, the series Dragon Ball Z opens with a powerful adversary named Raditz, who is so formidable that it leads to an alliance between Piccolo and Goku. In a critical situation, Goku immobilizes Raditz using a full-nelson hold, trapping them both in place.
In this scenario, Piccolo makes the most of the opportunity and successfully unleashes his Special Beam Cannon attack, a move he’s famous for. This deadly technique strikes its intended victim, marking an instance where two Saiyans were eliminated using the same attack. This event underscores the Special Beam Cannon as one of the most impressive attacks in Dragon Ball Z. It’s heartwarming to see Gohan adopting this technique and preserving Piccolo’s legacy, much like he has with Goku’s Kamehameha.
Dragon Ball Z, Episodes 148 & 149, “The Monster Is Coming” & “He’s Here”
In this action-packed series, Android duo 17 and 18 prove to be formidable adversaries, causing significant chaos before they merge with Cell for his enhancement. Notably, there are two intense battles featuring these androids – one sees Vegeta facing off against 18, while another has Piccolo squaring off against Android 17. This fight stands out as both combatants possess an impressive balance of power, a result of Piccolo’s recent fusion with Kami.
In this encounter, Piccolo and Android 17 display distinct strengths, but it’s clear that Piccolo is the more ruthless and formidable fighter. He effectively portrays Android 17 as inept and outmatched, which is quite an accomplishment. Notably, Piccolo unleashes his Hellzone Grenade, a devastatingly powerful attack, during this battle. However, the appearance of Imperfect Cell forces Piccolo and Android 17 to join forces against this more formidable adversary. Consequently, no clear victor can be declared from their fight.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 214, “Who Will Fight Who?”
The long-standing tradition of “Dragon Ball” is the World Tournament, and its 25th edition marks the first time it takes place within “Dragon Ball Z”. This significant event allows Goku to return to Earth for 24 hours. However, this tournament also serves as a focal point for Babidi’s harmful attacks and his attempts to awaken Majin Buu. Despite the tournament ending abruptly due to an outbreak of chaos, there are still some impressive matches leading up to it.
It’s thrilling to see Piccolo returning to the World Tournament after playing a villainous role in its 23rd edition. Yet, it’s quite unexpected when he decides to compete under the name “Ma Junior,” a nod to his alias from the same tournament. This old name stirs up complex feelings due to its history, what it symbolizes, and Piccolo’s connection to the Demon King Piccolo. This moment brings back memories of fear and allows Piccolo to acknowledge his hidden demon ancestry.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 170, “A Girl Named Lime”
In the world of Dragon Ball, Piccolo stands out with both immense power and a set of distinctive abilities that are deeply rooted in his Namekian heritage. While not entirely unique to him, Piccolo showcases a remarkable cloning ability that is mostly used for training purposes. This particular training method involving clones was first employed during his preparation for the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta, but it has been utilized on other occasions, such as during the Garlic Jr. Saga and while preparing for the Cell Games.
Among these instances, the last one stands out as the most stunning and potent. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, both Vegeta and Goku train alongside their sons. It’s quite fascinating that Piccolo chooses himself as his ultimate sparring partner. This skill could be invaluable in combat, yet it’s worth noting that Piccolo uses it for self-improvement during training instead.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 237, “Final Atonement”
In Dragon Ball Z, Majin Buu embodies unmatched power, yet the source of its awakening is a significant risk. The manipulator during the early stages of the Buu Saga is Babidi, who controls Majin Buu to fulfill his evil desires and bolster his own ego. Though Babidi may not possess immense physical strength, his mastery over magic makes him a formidable danger.
In a stunning turn of events, Piccolo, fed up with Babidi’s persistent ridicule and disruptive behavior, decisively puts an end to the dark wizard by dividing him in two with his bare hand. This unexpected display of force serves as a significant action for Piccolo, mirroring the mounting exasperation among viewers towards Babidi and his reliance on Buu’s power. However, this is only temporary, as Buu eventually eliminates Babidi from the scene.
Dragon Ball Z, Episodes 142 & 143, “Borrowed Powers” & “His Name Is Cell”
In Dragon Ball Z, the heroes already have their hands full dealing with Dr. Gero’s deadly Androids. Then, Cell emerges on the scene, causing destruction, claiming lives, and amassing power. Among the series’ formidable villains, Imperfect Cell stands out as particularly chilling due to his ability to drain his victims of their life energy. Determined to confront this menace, Piccolo bravely ventures into Gingertown to engage Imperfect Cell in battle, even though he isn’t fully aware of the extent of the danger. To fortify himself for the challenges that lie ahead, Piccolo proposes reuniting with Kami by undergoing Namekian fusion once more.
In a new development, Piccolo receives another significant energy surge, sparking further debate about his “Super Namekian” status. The action-packed encounter between two fierce beasts is electrifying. Furthermore, this confrontation signals Cell beginning to employ the heroes’ own techniques against them. Watching Piccolo skillfully dodge Imperfect Cell’s Special Beam Cannon or shield himself from a Kamehameha is truly captivating. However, the most thrilling part of this fight occurs when Piccolo cleverly forces Cell to reveal his scheme, then rips off a drained arm and miraculously regenerates the lost limb.
Dragon Ball Z, Episode 27, “Nimbus Speed”
Dragon Ball Z has evolved significantly since its initial Saiyan Saga. Yet, some of the series’ most harrowing moments stem from the ordeal inflicted by Nappa. The peak power of this villain results in the deaths of Tien and Chiaotzu. Following this, Nappa shifts his attention to Krillin, Gohan, and Piccolo. Given Gohan’s hidden Saiyan abilities, Nappa aims a powerful Bomber DX blast at the young boy.
In the world of Dragon Ball Z, Piccolo, without a second thought, steps in front of an impending attack, giving up his life. This selfless act might not seem “cool” to many, but it’s one of the most emotionally charged moments in the series. It underscores that Piccolo has transformed from a villain into a true hero, a change that endures throughout his existence. Piccolo’s sacrifice serves as a testament to both Gohan and Goku, demonstrating that they can always rely on him.
