Preparing myself for an abundance of fresh anime blossoming in Spring 2025, it appears that this season is brimming with both novel offerings and continuations of fan favorites. Unlike certain years that may seem barren when it comes to innovative storylines and characters, this year is shaping up quite promisingly. There’s a delightful mix of romance, mystery, comedy, witches, fantastical realms to everyday life, historical epochs to futuristic landscapes, post-apocalyptic worlds and dystopian societies, as well as serene slice-of-life scenes. Even some series are introducing protagonists from universities instead of the usual high schools. However, which among the numerous new shows truly outshine their peers? I’ve got the answers for you!
This current anime season offers numerous fresh and thrilling series to discover, as popular shows like “Go! Go! Loser Ranger!” and “I’ve Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level” continue their second seasons. Meanwhile, the spin-off prequel “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” joins the lineup from “My Hero Academia“, and the classic series “Black Butler” enters its fifth season with the “Emerald Witch Arc“. Don’t miss out on these unique storylines that are hidden gems!
Anne Shirley
Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley, an imaginative orphan with a quick temper, eagerly anticipates adoption. However, upon her arrival at the Cuthbert household in Avonlea, she is not the young farmhand boy that the older siblings Marilla and Matthew had envisioned.
Initially, one might find it surprising to consider an anime version of L.M. Montgomery’s timeless novel “Anne of Green Gables.” However, it’s worth noting that this story has been adapted into anime format before, such as Isao Takahata’s “Anne of Green Gables” series from 1979. Given the growth and self-discovery journey of Anne, spanning her years from eleven to seventeen in a peaceful rural setting, and her encounters with diverse individuals, a Ghibli-style anime adaptation seems fitting to bring this captivating tale to life.
Food for the Soul
Five young women embark on their college journey, seeking to enliven their daily routines. They establish the Food Culture Exploration Club! Among them is the reserved yet skillful cook Mako Kawai, determined and reliable Kurea Furutachi who assists in her family’s restaurant, outgoing but impulsive club leader Shinon Ogawa (also a childhood friend of Mako), calm and collected Tsutsuji Higa, and Nana Hoshi, a former member of the puzzle club. United by their shared passion for food, these university freshmen join forces with popular food vlogger Mokotaro to uncover delectable culinary delights!
If you’re a fan of series featuring adorable girls in everyday activities, particularly enjoying food, then this life-like animation is definitely worth checking out! This endearing production shares creative roots with the team behind Non Non Biyori. Starting April 15th, a manga version will be available on Kadokawa’s free manga platform Alive+, beautifully illustrated by Quro.
Apocalypse Hotel
In a Tokyo neighborhood called Ginza, the Galaxy Tower Hotel stands tall, functioning even though it lacks human guests. Since humankind has vanished, Yachiyo – a hotelier robot – and her robotic colleagues keep the empty hotel running smoothly each day, as if nothing had changed. Despite the decaying structures surrounding them that whisper tales of a bygone civilization, these diligent robots patiently wait for their owner’s return, hoping for the opportunity to serve again someday.
In an apocalyptic scenario where humanity has vanished, one might expect living normally to be a dismal task. Yet, despite these challenging circumstances, a hotelier robot continues to radiate cheerfulness, holding onto the dream of a more vibrant future. With its pristine hotel standing in stark contrast against a decaying backdrop, this series promises to captivate audiences with its poignant portrayal of hope amidst despair.
Everyday Host
Initially a struggling ex-life insurance salesman, Hajime Sekiguchi, resorts to work at Club One in the vicinity of Shinjuku. Here, he crosses paths with unconventional hosts: Koichi, a seasoned host with a youthful appearance who’s been around for 20 years; Ryoichi, a previous idol known for his romantic persuasion techniques; and Senichi, a competitive host with a penchant for mobile gaming. Hajime discovers his calling by leveraging his insurance sales expertise to market himself effectively as a skilled host.
Based on the 4-panel manga by Nimo Gotō, this collection of humorous short animations offers a delightful respite when taking a break from viewing other series’ episodes!
Maebashi Witches
Yuina Akagi resides in an unremarkable town called Maebashi City, leading a routine high school life devoid of excitement. However, when her wardrobe mysteriously links to a captivating florist shop and she encounters Keroppe – an unusual orange frog wearing a bowtie – her monotonous existence takes an extraordinary turn. Along with four other girls, Azu Niisato, Kyoka Kitahara, Choco Mitsumata, and Mai Kamiizumi, Yuina is invited to transform into the “Maebashi Witches”, a magical girl idol collective that combines music, dance, and the fulfillment of dreams.
This season, an exciting new anime featuring magical girls as pop idols is set to debut! These five characters are under pressure to meet high expectations, given their dual roles as magical witches and music stars. The unique backdrop of a mystical interdimensional florist shop and a charming frog mascot will undoubtedly captivate fans with their enchanting tunes and fulfillment of dreams.
The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei: He Just Solves All the Mysteries
1948, post-war Tokyo marks the beginning of Kanna Kusakabe’s second year in high school. This is when she encounters the new language teacher, Akihiko Chuuzenji. Given that Kanna seems to attract unusual supernatural occurrences, she seeks advice from the aloof Chuuzenji-sensei in the library study room. As an unconventional pair, they embark on a journey of solving mysterious supernatural puzzles together.
Before Kyougokudou’s second-hand bookstore opened, “The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei” was published. This work is an adaptation from Aki Shimizu’s manga inspired by the Bara Jūji Sōsho (Rozen Kreuz Series) novels. It serves as a prequel spinoff to Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s Hyakki Yako novel series. The Rozen Kreuz Series novels are known as a “shared universe” within the Kyogoku’s Hyakki Yako novel series.
Zatsu Tabi: That’s Journey
As an observer, I see Chika Suzugamori, a dedicated college student with dreams of becoming a mangaka, struggling when her submissions to publishers are repeatedly turned down. On the verge of abandoning her aspirations entirely, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and exploration, unsure of its destination but eager for the experiences that await her. This adventure proves to be more than just a change of scenery; it becomes a source of inspiration and solace in her quest to make her mark in the world of manga.
In today’s competitive job market, many university graduates are facing challenges breaking into their desired industries. This series, however, empathizes with this struggle. While numerous individuals grapple with rejections and even consider giving up, Chika offers a fresh outlook in her quest to establish herself as a mangaka in the anime titled “Zatsu Tabi: That’s Journey“.
Me and the Alien Mūmū
In a seemingly ordinary daily routine at university, Sakurako Umeyashiki’s tranquil life is disrupted when it’s revealed that her housemate, whom she thought was just a cat, is actually an alien resembling a feline, named Mūmū. This alien had traveled from his war-ravaged planet to Earth in search of knowledge about household appliances, aiming to restore the technology lost due to conflict among his species. Caught up in the whirlwind of technological chaos, Sakurako embarks on an amusing adventure involving cats and advanced machinery.
Did you know that “Mūmū” is related to the paranormal magazine “Mū”? This publication has been a source of inspiration for numerous manga, games, and anime. If you’re a fan of “Dandadan”, don’t forget to check out this charming, supernatural slice-of-life series as a refreshing break from your usual viewing!
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman
Previously nurturing ambitions of being a grand master swordsman in his youth, Beryl Gardinant now humbly teaches the art of swordsmanship at a secluded dojo in the countryside. However, when one of his old students, who has since gained fame, knocks on his doorstep, he learns that he’s been tasked with instructing the knights of the Liberion Order and must journey to the capital to fulfill his new role. This reunion brings him face-to-face with some former pupils who have excelled as elite knights, a powerful mage, and the most accomplished adventurer, causing Beryl to ponder why he was chosen for this position given that their abilities greatly surpass his own.
Full of thrilling action and a touch of fantasy, “From Rustic Peasant to Skilled Swordsman” offers an exciting journey set in a medieval world. It’s refreshing to find an anime that deviates from the typical high school setting, instead focusing on a mature protagonist.
Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty
Lilisa Suzunomiya, who became a step-daughter of a real estate magnate following her mother’s remarriage, now attends Sakura no Kokoro Women’s Academy, an exclusive and refined all-girls school known for its high standards. These prestigious expectations compel Lilisa to put aside her guitar and aspirations of becoming a rockstar in favor of fitting into this more polished society. However, when she encounters the talented drummer Otoha Kurogane and hears his captivating rhythms, Lilisa’s passion for music is rekindled, and the two join forces to challenge the conventional expectations of proper ladylike behavior.
It doesn’t necessarily mean being ladylike requires polished elegance all the time. Just like music, it has its own interpretations of what cultivated and sophisticated means. Rock music isn’t excluded from this, either. Although these girls might face expectations to maintain a certain level of sophistication, they demonstrate that their high-energy rocking can be just as refined.
