Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had to bid farewell to beloved characters repeatedly over the past ten years or so. Over the last 17 years, the MCU has introduced hundreds of heroes, villains, and supporting characters into more than 40 films and TV series, and in many instances, it has chosen to retire these popular characters by depicting their deaths on screen. The deaths of Iron Man, Black Widow, and T’Challa during Phases 3, 4, and 5 were particularly heart-wrenching for fans. These fallen heroes are just a few examples of the many emotional departures that have left fans feeling somber whenever they think about the MCU.
Reflecting the powerful emotional bond between fans and the comic book series’ characters, some of the most heart-wrenching departures continue to linger vividly in the memory of viewers. Here is a list of ten particularly poignant character deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, presented without any specific ranking:
1. Nick Fury – The founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. and mentor to many Avengers, Fury’s unexpected death in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” left fans in shock.
2. Gamora – Daughter of Thanos and one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora sacrificed herself to save her teammates in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
3. Loki – Brother of Thor and nemesis to the Avengers, Loki was killed by Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” but his redemption arc continued in the Disney+ series “Loki.”
4. Heimdall – The ancient Asgardian guardian of the Bifrost, Heimdall sacrificed himself to save Thor and the people of Asgard in “Thor: Ragnarok.”
5. Quicksilver – Brother of Scarlet Witch, Pietro Maximoff was killed by Ultron in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
6. Agent Phil Coulson – A long-time member of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson was killed by Loki in the first Avengers film but was later revived and became a central character in the TV series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
7. Tony Stark (Iron Man) – The genius billionaire philanthropist sacrificed himself to save the universe in “Avengers: Endgame,” leaving fans mourning the loss of a beloved character.
8. Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) – One of the original Avengers, Natasha sacrificed herself to obtain the Soul Stone in “Avengers: Endgame.”
9. Vision – The synthezoid created by Ultron and brought to life by the Mind Stone, Vision was killed by Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
10. Gamora (alternate timeline) – In an alternate timeline created by the Time Stone, the original Gamora was killed by Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame,” despite her attempts to stop him.
Gamora
In the movie “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), the character Gamora, played by Zoe Saldaña, met her untimely end at the hands of Thanos, her adoptive father. He threw her off a cliff on Vormir to acquire the Soul Stone. This tragic demise was particularly distressing due to the irony that despite Thanos’ claim of love for Gamora, he callously sacrificed her for his destructive mission to erase half of all life in the universe. Although an alternate version of Gamora appears in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, Marvel Studios confirms that the Gamora fans came to know and cherish from the initial two “Guardians” films is forever lost.
Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
In “Avengers: Endgame,” the character Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson), met a tragic end reminiscent of Gamora. They both went back in time to obtain the Soul Stone from Vormir, leading to a heart-wrenching confrontation between Natasha and her longtime friend Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). Despite their mutual struggle over who should make the ultimate sacrifice, the highly trained assassin Natasha couldn’t be stopped. Fans were particularly moved by this event, as Black Widow had never starred in a solo film within the MCU before her untimely demise. This unfortunate turn of events was made even more poignant due to her consistent role as a supporting character throughout the series. Three years later, in the post-credits scene of the 2021 prequel-style “Black Widow” movie, Natasha’s younger sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) paid her a visit at the grave, an emotional moment that left many MCU viewers in tears.
Tony Stark/Iron Man
In the climactic scene of “Avengers: Endgame”, Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark (Iron Man) made countless cinema-goers weepy with his selfless act of sacrificing himself to secure the Avengers’ victory against Thanos during the Battle on Earth. With the six Infinity Stones clutched in his hand, he snapped, causing a fatal blow to their leader. Despite its tragic nature, Iron Man’s valiant final act was a poignant conclusion for a character who was both complicated and adored. This selfless act marked the end of an 11-year narrative that started with “Iron Man” in 2008. The initial stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe revolved around Iron Man, and upon his death, he left a void in numerous hearts.
Jane Foster
In the 2022 film “Thor: Love and Thunder,” I, as a character named Jane Foster, made my return. Almost instantaneously, viewers found themselves drawn into a storyline where I was battling cancer. This plot twist struck a chord with many, reminding them of someone they know who’s gone through or lost their life to the same disease – a battle that sadly hits close to home for too many. The film ended with my character’s passing, but it wasn’t all gloom and doom. Throughout the storyline, I rekindled my relationship with Thor, wielded Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor, and stood side by side with him in the final battle against Gorr the God Butcher. Despite the sadness that comes with my departure from the story, it’s the relatability of cancer – a disease that takes far too many people prematurely in reality – that makes my character’s journey all the more poignant.
T’Challa
In the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which released in early 2022, character King T’Challa, also known as Black Panther, is portrayed as having passed away off-screen due to an untreatable ailment. This on-screen death mirrors the real-life passing of actor Chadwick Boseman, who died from cancer in 2020. The tragic parallel between T’Challa and Boseman’s passings makes the character’s departure heartbreakingly poignant. Director Ryan Coogler is commendable for honoring both Boseman and T’Challa through a moving funeral sequence and a unique Marvel Studios introduction.
Queen Ramonda
In the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, Ramonda, the queen of Wakanda portrayed by Angela Bassett, met her end. This tragic occurrence happened during a flood caused by Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and the Talokan people. The grief from this loss was intensified as it followed the passing of T’Challa, causing immense sorrow among the Wakandans, particularly Shuri (Letitia Wright), who is both T’Challa’s brother and Ramonda’s daughter. The film’s poignant atmosphere before Ramonda’s death made her departure all the more heart-wrenching.
Lylla, Floor, and Teefs
2023’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” introduced us to Lylla, the otter (portrayed by Linda Cardellini), Floor the rabbit (Mikaela Hoover), and Teefs the walrus (Asim Chaudhry) – characters who formed a bond with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) during their confinement at the High Evolutionary’s research facility. A flashback scene showed that, while trying to break free, they all met a tragic end. Rocket was the only one who managed to escape, leaving him to bear the weight of his lost friends throughout the trilogy. The emotional impact of animal deaths in movies is intensified, and the demise of Lylla, Floor, and Teefs is no exception. Their brutal deaths and the long history of cruel experiments they endured make this one of the saddest moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Maria Hill
In the 2023 Disney+ series “Secret Invasion,” the demise of Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) was an unexpected turn of events. A character who had been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2012’s “The Avengers,” Hill met her end in a bombing attack in Moscow, Russia. Alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), she aimed to prevent the explosives they suspected were being carried by the Skrulls. Unfortunately, the bombs were strategically placed around the square and went off unexpectedly, taking both agents by surprise. Amidst the ensuing chaos, Gravik, a Skrull disguised as Fury (Kingsley Ben-Adir), shot Hill, resulting in her fatal injury. The death of Maria Hill was particularly jarring, considering the MCU hadn’t written such significant character deaths into a TV show at that point. The loss of Hill was disheartening because it occurred towards the end of “Secret Invasion”‘s first episode, and her potential to continue working alongside Fury in the series and future projects was cut short. Many fans were disappointed, especially given the underwhelming conclusion of “Secret Invasion,” which made Hill’s death seem even more regrettable.
