Have you noticed if your radar caught these Easter eggs in the trailer for Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+? The new footage from Marvel Studios’ revival of the Daredevil series provides a gritty, action-packed glimpse into the upcoming chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This installment brings Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) together once more, having made their comebacks in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Hawkeye (2021), respectively. The series takes place following the events of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) and Echo (2024), and features subtle nods to the broader MCU that may have gone unnoticed by some viewers.
The most noticeable is the Times Square billboard for the musical adaptation of Captain America, titled Rogers: The Musical, that was initially seen in Hawkeye and later appeared in various productions like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), She-Hulk, and upcoming films such as Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). A more subtle reference is an advertisement for Pingo Doce, a green guarana soda, which had a minor role in The Incredible Hulk (2008) and has since been featured in Ant-Man (2015) and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
Regarding Ant-Man, it’s anticipated that New York will usher in 2026 with the Time Square New Year’s Eve festivities, which are being funded by the Pym van Dyne Foundation. In 2023’s movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, we learned that Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lilly) regained control of Pym Technologies and transformed it into the Pym van Dyne Foundation. This organization, dedicated to her father’s research – the Pym Particles developed by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) – aims to make a positive global impact through initiatives focused on reforestation, affordable housing, and food production.
Towards the end of the preview, there’s a glimpse of Matt’s assortment of masks, featuring the iconic yellow Daredevil helmet he wore for the first time on She-Hulk, crafted by Luke Jacobson, a fashion designer from Los Angeles (played by Griffin Matthews). The distinctive “ketchup and mustard” suit was inspired by Bill Everett’s initial costume design for Daredevil, the Man Without Fear. Before he switched to his all-red attire in 1965’s Daredevil #7, this color scheme was used.
Stepping up to oversee the New Year’s Eve celebrations: none other than Wilson Fisk, formerly known as the crime lord Kingpin. The title “Born Again” comes from a five-issue comic book storyline penned by the iconic Daredevil writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli. In this tale, Kingpin uncovers Daredevil’s secret identity, using it to systematically ruin Matt Murdock’s life. This series also incorporates aspects from recent Daredevil comic book arcs by Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky, such as “Mayor Fisk” (issues #595-600 of Daredevil in 2017) and “Devil’s Reign” (#1-6 of Devil’s Reign in 2022). As a diehard comic book fan, I can’t wait to see how these stories unfold on the big screen!
In the trailer’s New Year’s Eve scene, it mirrors a scene from Daredevil issue 595, where Matt Murdock queries Foggy Nelson about the mysterious rise of Wilson Fisk to become Mayor of New York City, asking “But how on earth did the Kingpin end up as the Mayor of New York City?” To uncover the truth behind this enigma and discover what unfolds afterwards, check out ComicBook’s Daredevil: Devil’s Reign explainer.
In the Marvel Television series “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock, a lawyer who’s blind yet has heightened senses, navigates justice through his busy law firm. Simultaneously, former crime lord Wilson Fisk delves into politics within New York City. As their hidden pasts resurface, they are inexorably drawn towards a fateful confrontation.
This upcoming Marvel Studios series “Daredevil: Born Again,” featuring Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher, along with a stellar cast that includes Margarita Levieva, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, and Ayelet Zurer, premieres March 4 on Disney+.
