10 Months Till Oblivion Remake? Todd Howard Says Bethesda Has a Strange Reason

For approximately a year now, whispers about a potential remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion have been circulating online. Lately, these rumors have gained momentum as an increasing number of leaks have verified the game’s development. In fact, even Bethesda Softworks has now confirmed that it is indeed in production.

Enthusiasts are still debating what features a potential remaster of “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion” using Unreal Engine 5 might offer. This iconic game, which significantly reshaped the role-playing genre through its compelling storyline, expansive game world, and groundbreaking quest system, could be even more captivating when updated with contemporary graphics.

Before all those exciting remaster leaks emerged, Todd Howard, as a dedicated fan myself, shared that Bethesda Studio doesn’t typically rush into Elder Scrolls remasters. He elaborated on his reasoning behind this decision.

Todd Howard’s shocking take on Elder Scrolls remasters

In the previous year, MrMattyPlays had an interesting conversation with Howard regarding the future developments in Elder Scrolls, Fallout series, and additional features in Starfield. During this discussion, fans were surprised by Howard’s response when questioned about remastering classic Bethesda games.

In today’s video game market, it’s common to find developers updating older games by enhancing their gameplay mechanics and visuals in what is known as a remake or remaster. At that point, however, Howard was not fond of this practice.

Howard explained that Bethesda places a greater emphasis on ensuring their games are compatible with contemporary hardware, rather than updating them with fresh technologies. Essentially, they aim to preserve the charm of these classic games by not overhauling them with modern graphics or quality-of-life improvements, allowing players to enjoy them as they originally experienced them upon release.

From Howard’s statements, it seems like there might be a lack of focus on remakes at Bethesda. Contrastingly, the official confirmation for the Oblivion remaster dates back to 2023. This revelation was made during the FTC’s hearing regarding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, where it was disclosed that Bethesda had plans for a remastered version of Oblivion.

Bethesda officially teases Oblivion remaster

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been flooded with leaks about Oblivion. From game screenshots to file sizes, we had plenty of information despite Bethesda remaining silent on the matter. But now, our speculations can come to an end as Bethesda has officially confirmed the remaster’s existence.

Indeed, Bethesda has confirmed that on April 22nd, they will unveil some sort of announcement concerning “IV.” Given the image depicts a character with a masked face, it’s apparent that the developer is likely referring to the widely speculated remaster of Oblivion in this case.
