Since new titles constantly appear and disappear from Netflix each month, and its algorithm is known for dividing viewers into separate groups, it’s no surprise that subscribers might occasionally struggle to find something to watch. We’ve all been in that situation, stuck in a cycle of browsing without finding a movie to enjoy. If you want to skip the browsing blues and start enjoying action movies right away, here’s a list of 10 fantastic action films on Netflix that you might not have seen yet. Let’s get this show on the road!
Badland Hunters
In a follow-up with a relaxed connection to the dystopian South Korean success Concrete Utopia, the movie titled Badland Hunters unfolds in a post-apocalyptic Seoul. Years have passed since the city transformed into a desolate wasteland, mirroring the grand and ominous atmosphere of the original film. The story revolves around a rugged hunter who takes personal action when a young person dear to him gets kidnapped by a deranged doctor who performs inhumane experiments on humans. Although the set design and fight sequences are thrilling, it’s Ma Dong-seok that makes this film truly stand out. He brings an intriguing blend of humor and intensity to the action, making for an unforgettable performance.
SAS: Red Notice (Rise of the Black Swan)
Titled both “SAS: Rise of the Black Swan” and “SAS: Red Notice,” this film is adapted from the first book penned by former Special Air Services soldier Andy McNab. However, its release in the same year as the Netflix’s “Red Notice” featuring Dwayne Johnson led to a title change, possibly causing it to be overlooked. Unfortunately, this overlooked gem is actually quite enjoyable. Boasting a talented cast including Sam Heughan, Ruby Rose, Andy Serkis, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hopper, and Tom Wilkinson, the film offers an exciting blend of military action and spy elements. You can stream it on Netflix here.
Wingwomen
A strong ensemble of actors certainly captivates an audience, and while the series “Wingwomen” may be somewhat formulaic, its action-packed, humorous, and alluring performances are hard to ignore. This is reminiscent of a more mature version of “Charlie’s Angels,” minus the excessive exploitation and frivolity. The talented Mélanie Laurent takes on multiple roles here, skillfully directing exciting action sequences, contributing sharp dialogue, and sharing the screen with Adèle Exarchopoulos, Manon Bresch, and Isabelle Adjani. You can stream it on Netflix by clicking here.
Kate
Mary Elizabeth Winstead possesses exceptional talent and has never felt compelled to prove herself; instead, she’s often overlooked as one of the most undervalued actors working today. However, her portrayal of an action heroine in the film Kate was captivating, and it remains engaging four years after its release. French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan finds inspiration in Winstead’s talent, seamlessly incorporating his background in visual effects to infuse Kate with a vibrant, stylish atmosphere. Winstead excels as an assassin hired to target the yakuza, but her life is turned upside down by a mysterious poisoning. Woody Harrelson’s performance in this film may seem somewhat over-the-top, yet he still manages to be entertaining in a movie that offers pure enjoyment from start to finish.
Hold the Dark
Jeremy Saulnier’s debut Netflix production, titled “Hold the Dark“, paved the way for his future Netflix success with the thrilling action movie, “Rebel Ridge“. Despite being less straightforward and featuring less showy action, “Hold the Dark” is still a gripping drama that maintains a similar level of suspense as his initial film, the outstanding “Blue Ruin“. The Alaskan backdrop adds an extra layer of intensity to the story. Jeffrey Wright delivers his usual powerful performance in this unpredictable film, portraying a man who finds himself in deeper trouble than he anticipated while on a mission to hunt wolves.
Kill Boksoon
In the realm of action cinema, I’ve stumbled upon a gem that’s a thrilling fusion of “John Wick” and “Kill Bill,” amped up by the captivating performance of Jeon Do-yeon, one of South Korea’s finest living actors. Her recent role in “Revolver” (2024) is a testament to her talent.
“Kill Boksoon” transports us into an absurd, assassin-filled universe reminiscent of the “John Wick” world. The story unfolds around a highly esteemed hit woman, balancing her deadly profession with the role of a single mother. When she’s given an assignment she might resist, curiosity compels me to suggest you rush to the cinemas and experience it for yourself. Trust me on this one; “Kill Boksoon” is not a movie to be missed!
Below Zero
Unlike typical Spanish films, “Below Zero” stands out in several ways, even though snow and freezing cold aren’t usually associated with it. Interestingly, this movie was released during Storm Filomena’s heavy snowfall in Madrid, which adds an unexpected twist to its release. The plot revolves around police officers on a prison transport whose vehicle is halted by potential hijackers. This sets off a thrilling ride of tension and action that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout. You can stream it on Netflix here.
Ballerina
While not “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” the movie “Ballerina” boasts similar panache and flair. Starring Jeon Jong-seo, who’s recently made a name for herself in “Burning” and “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area,” this film manages to make us accept her as a former bodyguard. Once we witness her ruthless actions on screen, there’s no doubt in our minds. “Ballerina” is a revenge-themed film with neon-lit scenes that depict blood, both sleek and stylish but incredibly brutal.
Xtreme (2021)
In most cases, you won’t encounter impressive swordplay outside of samurai movies, but the film “Xtreme” (known as “Xtremo” in Spanish) breaks that rule and then some. This movie will have you itching to hit the gym and learn self-defense moves. It’s simply captivating. The story revolves around a man who was abandoned after his brother treacherously betrayed the family and murdered their father. Similar to the protagonist in “Oldboy”, he’s spent years honing his skills for revenge, but unlike him, this character has a strategy. Watching “Xtreme” is like observing a toy being wound tighter and tighter before being unleashed with fervor. Stream it on Netflix here.
The Night Comes for Us
In a unique blend of recognition and anonymity, the film “The Night Comes for Us” stands out as one of the outstanding recent action movies that many people haven’t had the chance to watch yet. This Indonesian masterpiece by accomplished genre director Timo Tjahjanto follows the story of a gang enforcer who finds himself in a precarious situation after trying to shield the only survivor of a massacre he was involved in, causing him trouble from virtually all corners. The film’s cultural nuances offering insights into South Asian gang life, breathtaking action sequences, and poignant emotional depth make “The Night Comes” for Us an exhilarating, gory action epic.
