It’s no overstatement to say that “Pokemon Legends: Arceus” is one of the top Pokemon games in recent years, if not among the best in the series as a whole. Consequently, it’s no wonder that “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” has been generating so much buzz, despite the limited information released since its announcement. Fortunately, details have started to trickle out, and recently, The Pokemon Company, Nintendo, and Game Freak gave us a sneak peek at their upcoming action RPG, along with its first gameplay footage. As a result of this reveal, we now know more about “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”. In this article, we’ll go over the ten most significant details that have been unveiled so far about the game.
SETTING
Initially revealed last year, it’s been confirmed that “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” will be centered exclusively within the Lumiose City, modeled after Paris, in the Kalos region. New information has surfaced about this upcoming game. Notably, the entire gameplay will occur within the city limits, implying we won’t traverse the entire Kalos region again; instead, we’ll be exploring an enlarged and detailed Lumiose City, which is expected to be the largest Pokemon city featured in a game so far. In contrast to “Pokemon Legends: Arceus,” set in the past Sinnoh region, “Z-A” will unfold in the present day. It’s clear that Game Freak isn’t simply following the pattern established by “Arceus.
STORY
In the game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Lumiose City undergoes a significant transformation, often referred to as an urban renewal project, with the aim of creating a harmonious living space for both people and Pokemon. As you embark on your adventure, you’ll encounter Lumiose City at various points during your travels. However, how you get entangled in this redevelopment plan is yet to be revealed. Throughout your journey in the bustling city, Hotel Z will serve as your main hub, a place where fans of Pokemon X and Y may recognize the face running it. Moreover, the legendary Pokemon Zygarde plays a role in the story, but the specifics are, fittingly, shrouded in mystery.
CHARACTERS
In the narrative of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, certain pivotal characters have been disclosed. Based on your selection as a male or female trainer, you’ll encounter either Taunie or Urbain, both being Hotel Z’s Pokemon Trainers. They assist the hotel owner, who is none other than AZ, a significant character from Pokemon X and Y. For those not in the know, AZ is over 3000 years old, was once the king of Kalos region, and played a crucial role in an ancient conflict that took place in this part of the Pokemon universe. Floette, AZ’s trusted Pokemon companion, will also make an appearance. Additionally, there’s Jett, CEO of Quasartico, the driving force behind Lumiose City’s urban renewal project, and Vinnie, his secretary.
STARTERS
When a new Pokemon game is introduced, there’s always one question on everyone’s mind: “Who are the starting Pokemons?” And just as expected, the starters for Pokemon Legends: Z-A have been disclosed. Similar to its predecessor, it will feature a blend of starter Pokemons from various regions, and interestingly, none of the three are from the region this game is based on. Instead, two starters from the Johto region – Totodile and Chicorita – make their return, while Tepig from the Unova region is also reappearing. Unfortunately for Cyndaquil, it seems Typhlosion’s past actions have led to its exclusion in this game.
WILD ZONES
In the new game, “Pokemon Legends: Z-A,” all the action takes place within Lumiose City. This is quite a departure from the previous game, “Arceus.” However, this city setting raises some questions about wild Pokemon battles. The city will feature numerous designated areas called Wild Zones, which are sections of Lumiose City set aside as exclusive habitats for wild Pokemon. In these zones, players can find and engage in battles with wild Pokemon, but the exact number of such zones within the city remains undisclosed.
CITY EXPLORATION
Absolutely, as noted earlier, you should anticipate a vast amount of city exploration, which is more prevalent than in any other Pokemon game. The upcoming title, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is entirely set within the confines of the largest city in the Kalos region. This game promises numerous dense urban landscapes for players to navigate. The recent gameplay footage reveals some intriguing movement mechanics, such as riding elevators and jumping across rooftops that seem fully explorable. Whether any of Arceus’ open-world traversal mechanics will reappear is yet to be determined.
COMBAT
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the groundbreaking change in “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”. This game is breaking new grounds because, for the very first time in the series, battles won’t be turn-based! Instead, real-time action will let both Pokémon and trainers move freely. And Each attack will have unique attributes like range and area of effect, making the timing and strategy of your moves crucial to the battle’s outcome. From what we’ve seen in the footage (including the user interface), each of your active Pokémon’s four moves will be assigned to a separate button, with each move having its own cooldown period. This is truly a game-changer that promises a more dynamic and engaging experience for us fans!
MEGA EVOLUTIONS
As a devoted gamer, I’ve seen Pokémon’s attempts to recreate the magic of Mega Evolutions with Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Terastrallization, but none have quite hit the mark like the original. The fan-favourite feature is making a comeback in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, as confirmed when it was announced last year. The recent sneak peek offered a glimpse into what this iconic gameplay aspect will look like in the new game. By combining Key Stones and Mega Stones, select Pokémon will temporarily undergo mega evolution, transforming into powerful versions of themselves. Not only will they gain access to new, explosive moves, but some may even acquire entirely new types.
CONFIRMED MEGAS
As a diehard Pokémon fan, I’ve been thrilled by the sneak peeks of Pokemon Legends: Z-A so far! Already, several Mega Evolutions have been officially unveiled and will be included in the game. These include Gyarados, Kangaskhan, Absol, Gardevoir, Sableye, Altaria, Ampharos, Lucario, and both Charizard’s Mega Evolutions.
It seems plausible that we might also witness the introduction of Mega Evolutions for Feraligatr, Meganium, and Emboar for the first time ever, as they are our starters this time around. However, an official confirmation on this exciting possibility is yet to come.
LAUNCH
What’s the specific date we should mark in our calendars for the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A? Unfortunately, a precise date hasn’t been announced yet, but we do know it’s slated for late 2025. The Japanese trailers hint at a Fall launch, which typically means November, towards the end of the year. As for platforms, you’ll be able to play it on the Nintendo Switch, and while there’s no confirmation yet, it’s possible that Nintendo Switch 2 users might also get to enjoy the game, perhaps through backward compatibility.
