10 Ports We Want to See on the Nintendo Switch 2

Among the most eagerly awaited gaming systems in recent years is the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. With the arrival of newer consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, game developers have been updating their timeless titles to run smoothly on the latest hardware. Given that the Switch 2 reportedly supports 4K graphics, a feature absent from the original model launched in 2017, it’s reasonable to expect that many more games will be playable and compatible with the new console.

As a dedicated Nintendo Switch gamer, I’ve been pondering about ten awesome games from the second generation that I believe should make their way onto our beloved console, either on launch day or later down the line. Here’s my wish list!

Baldur’s Gate 3

It’s quite unexpected that “Baldur’s Gate 3” isn’t available on the Nintendo Switch, given its features and gameplay style. The game’s top-down perspective and mechanics appear tailor-made for the touchpad and controls of a Nintendo console. Consequently, it seems unusual if Larian Studio’s renowned title doesn’t make an appearance on the next major Nintendo platform.

In the mystical world of Forgotten Realms, you’ll embark on an adventure with a vibrant group of outcasts, fighting against Mind Flayers and their harmful worms to save yourself and the realm. This immersive tale offers endless hours of exploration, making it perfect for the proposed Nintendo Switch 2. Its portable design allows you to play anytime, anywhere – whether that’s close to your computer or console or on-the-go.

Elden Ring

When transferring any content, make sure to choose a game that enthusiasts will eagerly revisit, regardless of prior playthroughs. One such highly-acclaimed title is “Elden Ring,” often referred to as the top game of the decade, developed by FromSoftware. This Soulsborne game swept up almost every accolade upon its release in 2021, and for a valid reason.

In your role as a Tarnished character, you are tasked with restoring the Elden Ring and ascending the throne amidst challenging boss battles. The game’s intricate, demanding, yet delicate combat within its expansive fantasy open-world continues to receive accolades even now, thanks to “Shadow of the Erdtree” and the upcoming “Nightreign.” With the anticipated release of the Switch 2, there is a clear demand for challenging games. “Elden Ring” would make an excellent choice to demonstrate this capability with a port.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Despite initially not being available on Nintendo consoles, “Final Fantasy VII” was a remarkable tale when it debuted in 1997. Its remake, which focuses only on a quarter of the original narrative, is set within the confines of the city of Midgar and offers a fresh take on the classic game. As the mercenary Cloud, you’ll ally with an eco-activist group to bring down the powerful corporation Shinra in their quest for justice.

The action RPG combat, multiplayer options, stunning visuals, and epic soundtrack of Final Fantasy VII Remake make it an excellent candidate for inclusion on the Switch 2. Given the popularity of role-playing games, this title is relatively easy to port compared to its sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Additionally, since the prequel, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, is available on Nintendo Switch, fans who have followed the story of that young SOLDIER may be eager to continue the journey.

Final Fantasy XIV

On the Nintendo Switch, multiplayer games from third-party developers were relatively scarce, excluding hit titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 3. The potential arrival of Switch 2 offers an opportunity to rectify this situation, and what better game to demonstrate this change than Final Fantasy XIV? Although a different Final Fantasy title is included in the current list, the significant influence that its fourteenth installment has garnered is something Nintendo could benefit from by integrating it into their Nintendo Switch Online service.

In this game, you assume the role of a Warrior of Light tasked with saving Eorzea. However, players find joy not just in the storyline but also in the multiplayer interactions and community building. Whether it’s during intense real-time battles or celebrating various festivals, the social aspect is highly appreciated. The game’s director, Yoshi-P, has expressed interest in porting this title, suggesting that development may be underway. If not, it certainly deserves such a move.

Metaphor: ReFantazio

When the Persona series debuted on Nintendo Switch, it was like two soulmates reuniting in the realm of Role-Playing Games. The art style and turn-based gameplay were a perfect fit for the console. Therefore, it’s only logical that Atlus’ latest critically-acclaimed fantasy RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, should also find its home on this platform.

Explore a nameless hero’s journey as they vie for the throne of Euchronia, a united kingdom, in the name of a seemingly deceased prince. This noble quest unfolds amidst fierce competition with the militaristic Louis. The game offers immersive turn-based gameplay, captivating storytelling, endearing characters, and stunning visuals that will resonate deeply with Nintendo enthusiasts, evoking memories of classic RPGs from GameCube and NES. This innovative intellectual property is poised to captivate a new audience, based on the numerous accolades it has garnered thus far, signaling the beginning of a promising series.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Similar to how Elden Ring aims to bring the best, you’ll need to deploy top-tier options. In this scenario, those top-tier choices belong to Arthur Morgan, the lead character from the 2018 hit game Red Dead Redemption 2. As a prequel to Red Dead Redemption, this sequel focuses on a band of outlaws navigating a constantly evolving Wild West setting.

Even though it was launched over five years ago, the stunning visuals, engaging open-world gameplay, and captivating storyline of Red Dead Redemption remain exceptional. The original Red Dead Redemption was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch, much like Final Fantasy VII, sparking curiosity about the backstory of its characters, such as protagonist John Marston. Given that Grand Theft Auto VI is presumably forthcoming, it seems only right for Nintendo Switch 2 users to have a Rockstar-created world to explore in the meantime.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

First released on Nintendo GameCube in 2005, Resident Evil 4 was a groundbreaking game, not just for the Resident Evil franchise, but also for Nintendo due to its cleverness, horror, and action. Fast forward to 2023, after the successful remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, Capcom did what many thought was unthinkable – they remade RE4. This remake not only rekindled the essence and excitement of the original, reviving the story of seasoned rookie cop Leon Kennedy on his mission to save the president’s daughter, but also modernized it with updated controls and enhanced graphics.

Consequently, it seems only just that those who enjoyed it on the GameCube could appreciate an upgraded version on the Switch 2. In essence, this would represent a complete circle for the console, as the high-quality graphics and gameplay would serve as an excellent demonstration of the system’s potential.

Visions of Mana

During the 90s, numerous classic role-playing games migrated onto Nintendo consoles, including titles like “Chrono Trigger” and “Dragon Quest”. Yet, it was a series known as “Mana” that captivated audiences with its imaginative fantasy aspects, dynamic real-time mechanics, and vivid colorful settings. Among the Mana series, it was “Secret of Mana” that was highly acclaimed for being one of the top games available at the time.

After quite a while, the Mana series came back officially with 2024’s Visions of Mana, now available on modern gaming platforms. The game, focusing on young warrior Val escorting various Alms to the Mana Tree, has been satisfying that long-standing craving for some Nintendo enthusiasts who may still be yearning for it. With its vivid settings, engaging combat, and upbeat tunes, it seems tailor-made for Nintendo, making it a strong contender for inclusion in the Switch 2 lineup.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Among all Nintendo games that could potentially be transferred to the Switch 2, “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker” stands out as an excellent choice. Originally released on the Nintendo GameCube and later on the Wii U, this classic adventure follows the journey of a young Link across a water-filled world in his quest to defeat Ganon and rescue his sister. The game retains many beloved aspects from the Zelda series, such as its combat system and music, while also showcasing a distinctive, vibrant aesthetic that has endeared it to fans.

As a longtime fan, I’ve been yearning for the return of this classic game for years. Its gameplay remains engaging, and it offers a heartwarming nostalgic experience that many cherish. Moreover, given the more mature tones of games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, showcasing the vibrant, whimsical charm of Wind Waker could serve as a delightful change of pace.

Yakuza Kiwami 2

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been thrilled to witness the growing recognition of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series in recent times. After its debut on Nintendo consoles last October with the remake, Yakuza Kiwami, based on the original 2005 game, it’s high time for its sequel, Yakuza Kiwami 2, to follow suit and make its way onto these platforms too.

Back in the lively urban setting of Kamurocho, Kiryu is tasked with halting a fierce feud between the Togo and Omi gangs. Simultaneously, he seeks a capable leader for the Togo Clan. With both new and familiar faces, the intense action sequences and compelling narrative will deliver an immersive experience on the upcoming Switch 2. Since Nintendo is yet to host the entire Yakuza (Like a Dragon) series, this could be the ideal moment to rectify that situation.
