10 Power Rangers Teams That Totally Disappointed Fans

Following its premiere in 1993, the franchise continued for an impressive 30 years, offering fans numerous thrilling adventures starring the well-known multicolored superhero team protecting Earth from evil forces. After the “Power Rangers In Space” season, each subsequent season introduced a fresh crew of heroes, complete with new costumes, Zords, motifs, visual styles, and character interactions. Although some teams have earned a special place in the hearts of fans, certain teams haven’t quite met the high expectations set by fans.

The charm of Power Rangers lay in its regular shake-up of the usual setup, as each fresh team offered viewers a new set of characters to root for and novel interactions among the Rangers. Yet, some teams throughout the series’ duration fell short of fans’ expectations. Either the Rangers failed to meet their predecessors’ standards or the character relationships didn’t reach their full potential, resulting in these Power Rangers teams being less than satisfying for many viewers.

The Team Only Had One POC and One Female Member

In 2008, the 16th installment of the Power Rangers series, titled “Power Rangers Jungle Fury,” was released. This new team of Rangers drew their powers from Kung Fu and animal spirits. Initially aired, it has since gained recognition as a hidden gem within the franchise by many fans. In other words, Juken Sentai Gekiranger, its original Japanese title, is often viewed today as an underappreciated treasure of the series.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Casey Rhodes
Blue Ranger Theo Martin
Yellow Ranger Lily Chilman
Wolf Ranger Robert “RJ” James
Rhino Ranger Dominic Hargan
Shark Spirit Ranger Master Finn
Elephant Spirit Ranger Master Phant
Bat Spirit Ranger Master Swoop

The series was undeniably an upgrade from Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, but the team itself could have been more varied, particularly regarding diversity. Given its Kung Fu theme, one might expect a wider representation, as it only had one Asian-American Ranger and just one female Ranger, Yellow Ranger Lily. Given that diversity is crucial to Power Rangers, Jungle Fury fell short in this aspect.

Mystic Force’s Team Felt Like a Downgrade From S.P.D.

Following the hugely popular “Power Rangers S.P.D.”, the subsequent season, “Power Rangers Mystic Force”, was somewhat underwhelming for fans. Compared to “Mahō Sentai Magiranger”, its Japanese counterpart, “Mystic Force” revolved around a group of Rangers centered around magic and sorcery. This was a significant departure from the police-themed setting of “S.P.D.”. The reason “S.P.D.” resonated with fans was due to its compelling characters, so the “Mystic Force” team seemed like a minor step back in comparison.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Nick Russel
Green Ranger Xander Bly
Pink Ranger Vida Rocca
Blue Ranger Madison Rocca
Yellow Ranger Charlie “Chip” Thorn
White Ranger Udonna
Solaris Knight Daggeron
Wolf Warrior Leanbow

Although some rangers, like Green Ranger Xander and Pink Ranger Vida, were exceptional standouts within the team, it’s worth noting that Red Ranger Nick, who serves as the team leader, is typically recognized as one of the most significant characters in the franchise. However, due to the heavy focus on Nick throughout the series, some may argue that the other rangers didn’t receive enough attention when it comes to developing meaningful storylines.

The Writing for This Team Felt Mostly Comparable to the Previous Era

Following the disheartening phase during the New Saban Era, fans eagerly anticipated a fresh start with Hasbro taking over the Power Rangers production. They had high hopes that this change would introduce a significant shift in narrative style. Yet, when Hasbro’s inaugural season, Power Rangers Beast Morphers, debuted, it largely resembled the previous seasons.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Devon Daniels
Blue Ranger Ravi Shaw
Yellow Ranger Zoey Reeves
Gold Ranger Nate Silva
Silver Ranger Steel

Although Beast Morphers was seen as a step up from Power Rangers Ninja Steel, viewers felt let down due to minimal changes in the series’ overall tone. The new group of Rangers, unfortunately, were found to be just as generic as those from the recent Saban Era, with exceptions like Silver Ranger Steel. However, the rest of the team fell short of fans’ expectations for more engaging character development.

This New Team Didn’t Live up to Mighty Morphin’s Standards

The first three seasons of Power Rangers, drawing from the Super Sentai series Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, sparked a lot of curiosity among fans due to the anticipation for a fresh new team with new costumes. Yet, when they appeared on screen, many found them less exciting compared to the legendary Mighty Morphin’ team.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Aurico
White Ranger Delphine
Blue Ranger Cestro
Yellow Ranger Tideus
Black Ranger Corcus

Incorporating costumes and scenes from Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, the Alien Rangers introduced a unique twist in terms of costume designs; however, the Rangers themselves were perceived as uninteresting by many viewers. The vocal distortion employed to make them sound more ‘alien’ often resulted in muddled dialogue, which left fans wishing for something more captivating. Given that the Alien Rangers received their own mini-series at the conclusion of Mighty Morphin’ Season 3, fans had anticipated a more engaging storyline.

This Team Was a Massive Downgrade From RPM

Fans were thrilled when they learned that Saban regained the rights for Power Rangers, as they hoped it would bring the series back to the quality level of shows like Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Power Rangers Time Force from the later Saban Era.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Jayden Shiba
Pink Ranger Mia Watanabe
Green Ranger Mike
Blue Ranger Kevin
Yellow Ranger Emily
Gold Ranger Antonio Garcia

When Power Rangers Samurai debuted, viewers soon noticed the significant advancements made during the Disney era in the Power Rangers franchise. The Samurai Rangers came across as stiff and dull, particularly when set against the well-crafted characters of its forerunner, Power Rangers RPM. The show tended to overemphasize the Red Ranger, Jayden, and the other Rangers seemed excessively reverent towards him, a level rarely seen before.

These New Characters Took Time to Become Fan-Favorites

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: “Stepping into the shoes of a Power Rangers fan, I must confess that ‘Power Rangers Turbo,’ set against the backdrop of the Zordon Era, is often viewed as the least favorite season. A significant letdown for many fans was the mid-season departure of beloved characters like Tommy Oliver and Adam Park, paving the way for four newcomers. Having invested countless episodes with these iconic figures, it was a challenge to forge an emotional bond with the fresh team.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Theodore Jay “T.J.” Jarvis Johnson
Blue Ranger Justin Stewart
Green Ranger Carlos Vallerte
Yellow Ranger Ashley Hammond
Pink Ranger Cassie Chan

I must admit, it wasn’t the most promising beginning for the new Rangers when they debuted as Power Rangers in Turbo. Having only Blue Ranger Justin, from the original Turbo team, stay on board made it challenging for the newcomers to shine, given that he was a 12-year-old Ranger whom many fans found rather grating. However, they went on to win over hearts as fan-favorites in Power Rangers In Space, proving their mettle and eventually leaving their own indelible mark on the series.

The First Team of Completely Original Suits Felt Rather Bland

As the culminating season of the Power Rangers series (by 2025), Power Rangers Cosmic Fury had high expectations to meet. The advantage it held was that it followed directly from Power Rangers Dino Fury, allowing the final installment of the franchise not to focus solely on a new team of Rangers, who were just starting their journey, within only ten episodes.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Amelia Jones
Gold Ranger Aiyon
Green Ranger Izzy Garcia
Black Ranger Javi Garcia
Orange Ranger Fern
Blue Ranger Ollie Akana
Zenith Ranger Zayto

Although the Rangers delivered an impressive final season, what left fans feeling disillusioned was their less-than-impressive suit designs. As this was the first season to showcase all new Power Ranger suits, fan anticipation was high given the exceptional designs of the Titanium Ranger and Jungle Spirit Ranger suits. However, the Cosmic suits fell short, relying heavily on helmets from Dino Fury and a rather simplistic design for the torso area.

The Characters Had a Lot of Potential Upon Their Introduction

Fans found Power Rangers Ninja Steel quite disappointing. As the 24th and 25th seasons based on Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, fans expected much from the 25th anniversary entry. However, the series is often criticized for its lackluster characters, weak storytelling, and excessive slapstick humor, which are seen as its main flaws.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Brody Romero
Blue Ranger Preston Tien
Pink Ranger Sarah Thompson
Yellow Ranger Calvin Maxwell
White Ranger Hayley Foster
Gold Ranger Levi Weston

The Ninja Steel team initially showed great promise upon their debut, boasting a Red Ranger who had spent a significant portion of his life in space, a romantic connection between the Yellow and White Rangers, a novice magician as the Blue Ranger, and a newcomer stepping into the role of Pink Ranger. Unfortunately, the script failed to fully capitalize on these intriguing character interactions, resulting in a rather disappointing celebration for the 25th anniversary.

This Team Were Overshadowed by the Legacy Rangers

Power Rangers Operation Overdrive is frequently categorized as part of the “Disney Era”. This series was primarily based on GoGo Sentai Boukenger. Unfortunately, the team in Power Rangers Operation Overdrive is often regarded as one of the least successful groups within the entire Power Rangers franchise. The characters had promising personalities and group dynamics, but they often frustrated fans instead, with Blue Ranger Dax being a particular source of irritation for many viewers.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Mack Hartford
Blue Ranger Dax Lo
Pink Ranger Rose Ortiz
Yellow Ranger Ronny Robinson
Black Ranger Will Aston
Mercury Ranger Tyzonn

The part that was most disheartening about the team was perhaps best encapsulated in the 15th anniversary special, “Once a Ranger.” This special featured the return of five veteran Rangers following the defeat of the Overdrive Rangers and their loss of powers. Not only did the returning Rangers overshadow the Overdrive Rangers, but it was disappointing to fans that the Overdrive team seemed eager to abandon their Ranger roles when the legacy Rangers arrived. This was particularly frustrating given that many previous teams persisted in their fight even after losing their powers.

The 20th Anniversary Had Terrible Character Writing

In connection with their 20th anniversary, Power Rangers aggressively promoted Megaforce and Super Megaforce, but when it debuted, fans were disenchanted. The series aimed to pay tribute to Mighty Morphin’ by depicting the Rangers as high school students, a concept last seen in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. However, the Rangers seemed rather uninteresting and simplistic compared to the richly developed Mighty Morphin’ team, despite having 20 years of anticipation behind them.

Ranger Character
Red Ranger Troy Burrows
Blue Ranger Noah Carver
Green Ranger Jake Holling
Yellow Ranger Gia Moran
Pink Ranger Emma Goodall
Silver Ranger Orion

At its debut, the series Super Megaforce hinted at a season where the Rangers could transform into previous costumes. This aspect was exciting, but unfortunately, the storytelling regarding the characters was subpar and significantly affected the show. The season often consisted of continuous battle sequences, leaving minimal opportunities for significant character interactions. As the legacy Rangers appeared in the finale, an occasion that should have been momentous felt underwhelming as it revolved around a team of rather unimpressive Rangers.
