Developed by Warhorse Studios, this game is poised to be more impressive, immersive, and engaging across multiple aspects, featuring larger open-worlds, twice the playtime, and innovative weapons like the crossbow. Set in the 1500s, the sequel continues the tale of Henry, the son of a murdered blacksmith, who finds himself amidst a civil war against the Holy Roman Empire. The original game was praised for its authentic portrayal of the Middle Ages and complex systems such as realistic hunger/sleep mechanics and NPC behaviors. If you’re a fan of classic RPGs, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II promises an exceptional gaming experience that sets it apart from others in the genre.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows 

Releasing February 14th, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

At long last, I’ve got my hands on the much-anticipated Assassin’s Creed set in Japan! Originally slated for November release, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is finally here, giving me a chance to immerse myself in the samurai and ninja way of life during feudal Japan. I’ll be taking on the roles of two protagonists – the stealthy shinobi Naoe and the action-packed samurai Yasuke – as we strive to maintain harmony between the Brotherhood and the Templars amidst the chaos of a war-torn city.

This game seems to draw inspiration from Assassin’s Creed Origins with its RPG-style loot systems and skill trees, setting it apart from the more recent Assassin’s Creed Mirage. With so much anticipation building up, I can’t wait to see how Assassin’s Creed: Shadows unfolds when it drops in February!

Avowed

Releasing February 18th, 2025 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

In terms of reviving classic first-person role-playing games, Obsidian Entertainment, a studio affiliated with Xbox, has excelled in this area. Their portfolio includes hits like ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ and ‘The Outer Worlds’, and they are now diving back into fantasy terrain with ‘Avowed’. Set within the world of Pillars of Eternity’s Eotra, you will assume the role of an Ardyr Empire envoy on a mission to halt a perplexing plague in the sprawling Living Lands. In ‘Avowed’, you’ll be able to wield potent spells, assist those in distress, confront formidable foes, meet new allies, and traverse a vibrant yet treacherous open-world. Based on what has been previewed thus far, it appears that it could serve as an interim solution for the void left by ‘Skyrim’ until ‘Elder Scrolls VI’ is released.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Releasing February 28th, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

In a modern sense, “Monster Hunter Wilds” can be seen as a role-playing game (RPG), even though it leans more towards action titles. Set within the vast Forbidden Lands, you’ll step into the shoes of a Hunter – a warrior who hunts monsters. With numerous weapon options and playstyles at your disposal, you can either hunt or capture some of the region’s formidable creatures like the White Wraith Arkveld or the Leviathan Uth Duna. Many players are drawn to this series for its endless replayability and exceptional monster designs, and Wilds appears to have taken it a step further. Given the critical acclaim that “Monster Hunter World” received, including multiple Game of the Year nominations, fans might be in store for a Calicos-worthy feast.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition

Releasing March 20th, 2025 for Nintendo Switch.

10 years later, we’re back to New Los Angeles! The Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has been updated for the Nintendo Switch, originally released on the Wii U. In terms of the story, it revolves around a customizable survivor who joins BLADE, aiming to protect the city’s residents and explore the world of Mira. Gameplay-wise, it leans towards a tactical RPG with commands and quick-time events. However, you’ll also have control over powerful mechs, known as Skells, for flying, driving, and destroying enemies. The Xenoblade series has seen a revival due to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, 3, and characters like Shulk and Pyra/Mythra in Smash Bros. Therefore, the return of X is an event that both fans and newcomers should pay attention to, particularly as it includes fresh story content.

Elden Ring Nightreign

Releasing TBA 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Playtests in February.

Prepare yourself, Tarnished one, for a fresh adventure! “Nightreign” is an independent installment derived from the world of Elden Ring, incorporating multiplayer and roguelike elements. You can choose to embark on this challenge alone or with a group of two others. In this shrinking open-world, you’ll face formidable bosses in your journey towards the final battle. The familiar Soulsborne mechanics return, as you and your allies engage in intense combat against fearsome enemies that demand strategy and precision.

Since it is a smaller title, there won’t be any summoning or messaging features, but expect a quicker gameplay experience. Unlike Shadow of the Erdtree, playing Nightreign doesn’t require having Elden Ring. Playtests for Nightreign will commence in February, so if you’re eager to return to Limgrave, mark your calendars for January 10th!

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The debut of modern-day Persona’s first imitator is Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Although the gameplay, with its turn-based mechanics, will seem familiar to those who’ve played classic games like Final Fantasy or Persona, the narrative and setting are uniquely distinct. You, in a Belle Époque-era France, assume the roles of various crew members on a mission to destroy the Paintress, a character who eliminates individuals once her chosen age is depicted. Despite some similarities in tone, such as its apocalyptic atmosphere, Clair Obscur resembles a Hollywood production with its high-quality graphics and star-studded cast, including Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings). With ATLUS and Square Enix lacking competition this year, it seems possible that a new gaming titan could rise.

Exodus

In terms of space-themed video games, the Mass Effect series remains unmatched. Therefore, when the original creators reunite and produce a new game, we pay close attention. “Exodus,” developed by Wizards of the Coast and Archetype Entertainment, aims to replicate that electrifying essence, but with time manipulation and Matthew McConaughey. The narrative revolves around various space voyagers attempting to rescue an ancient civilization via time travel. Given its ambitious nature and the richness of its lore suggested by numerous story trailers, it appears to be a deeply immersive experience. As we eagerly await “Mass Effect 4,” “Exodus” could serve as an enticing detour for fellow Mass Effect enthusiasts, offering a captivating journey through the cosmos.

Crafting your own story has always been an essential part of great role-playing games, offering a unique challenge that’s incredibly rewarding. Building your narrative gives depth to the gameplay experience. The Fable series, while not the first to do so, established a high standard for creating adventures tailored to the player. Now, Playground Games is reviving the beloved Xbox franchise with the fittingly-named Fable, which appears to be preserving the charm and magic it was renowned for. In this new installment, you’ll traverse a rich world, live the life you choose, and battle formidable enemies. Both paths of good and evil are open to you, so follow your path and persevere to become who you want to be. Xbox enthusiasts, Fable is shaping up to be a title you definitely don’t want to overlook.

The Outer Worlds 2
