As a lifelong cinephile who’s seen more movies than I care to remember, I can say with certainty that the ever-changing landscape of streaming platforms has been both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, the convenience of having countless films at my fingertips is unparalleled; on the other, navigating the labyrinth of sharing policies feels like a never-ending game of cat and mouse.
In 2023, Netflix took the initiative to curb password sharing, with Disney+ joining the movement in 2024. However, numerous streaming platforms continue to permit users to share their accounts without restriction. Here’s a breakdown of which platforms enable account-sharing and where it’s off-limits.
THE STRICT ONES:
In a groundbreaking move implemented in May 2023, Netflix introduced an extra fee for users who aren’t part of the main household, and this new approach yielded impressive results. Daily signups exceeded the spike observed during the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020.
On March 14, 2024, Hulu decided to follow the trend towards restrictions and no longer allows account sharing outside of a single household. Now, they define a household as “the group of devices connected to your primary residence that are used by those who reside there.” Violators may face limitations or termination of their accounts.
In September 2024, Disney+ hopped on the restrictions trend, introducing new guidelines that applied to various regions such as the U.S., UK, Canada, certain parts of Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Now, users can expect to pay between $3.99 and $9.99 per month for “Additional Member” profiles, with the cost varying based on the subscription tier and geographical location.
In December 2024, Max (previously known as HBO Max), will start subtly reminding users about account sharing, with the intensity of these messages increasing over the years 2025 and 2026, focusing more on enforcement.
THE SHAREABLE ONES:
Amazon’s Prime Video not only tolerates password sharing but also playfully pokes fun at Netflix’s limitations. Simultaneously, it supports streaming on up to three devices, while sharing login details extends access to the whole Amazon account.
Apple TV+ provides flexible sharing opportunities by allowing up to six concurrent streams. However, it’s essential to note that the Apple TV+ account is linked to your personal Apple ID, emphasizing the importance of choosing trustworthy partners when sharing your login details.
Paramount+ distinguishes itself through a more lax policy, as there are no stringent limitations mentioned in its user agreement. It allows users to establish up to six individual profiles and stream content on as many as three devices concurrently.
Although Peacock’s terms explicitly warn against password sharing, it does not impose any limitations or restrictions on this practice. Instead, the service permits simultaneous streaming from up to three different locations and offers the option for multiple user profiles.
NICHE SERVICES WITH SHARING-FRIENDLY POLICIES:
Multiple specialized streaming platforms are quite lenient when it comes to their sharing policies. For instance, The Criterion Channel, which focuses on classic movies for film enthusiasts, permits unrestricted password sharing. Similarly, Arrow, dedicated to horror and cult films, provides similar flexibility at just $6.99 per month.
As a devoted fan, I’ve found that AMC’s horror-centric streaming platform takes a lax stance on password sharing – though they technically advise against it in their terms of agreement, they haven’t set up any technical obstacles yet. So, horror aficionados like myself can joyfully share our accounts with fellow fans until any policy adjustments are made public.
As a passionate advocate for Mubi, I’d like to share that this platform is tailored towards independent and art-house film enthusiasts like myself. It allows me to share my subscription with up to five users, but only two can stream simultaneously at any given time. The unique appeal of Mubi lies in its curation of lesser-known, one-of-a-kind films that cater to viewers who crave something beyond the ordinary.
LIVE TV STREAMING LANDSCAPE:
As a movie buff, I’ve found that live TV streaming services often have stricter rules, but there are exceptions. Among them, Sling TV stands out as the most generous when it comes to sharing. Regardless of where you are, their Blue plan allows for three simultaneous streams at once.
FuboTV allows for sharing, however, it only allows out-of-home viewing on mobile devices. On the other hand, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV have stricter measures in place; they need regular monthly location checks at home or limit external viewing to mobile devices.
THE FUTURE OF SHARING:
As a movie lover and keen observer, I’m excitedly watching the industry trend as it seems more streaming platforms might soon emulate Netflix’s strategies, particularly their successful restrictions. Yet, it’s understandable that smaller players may find these moves daunting due to their comparatively weaker market presence compared to the heavyweights.
For budget-friendly watchers, options besides sharing passwords encompass switching subscriptions regularly according to viewing tastes, making use of complimentary ad-inclusive platforms, and leveraging package offers from mobile networks or other service suppliers.
With the ongoing changes in the streaming world, the opportunity for unlimited password sharing might eventually be restricted. Yet, at present, many streaming services provide methods to distribute their content among family and acquaintances – even if they don’t explicitly approve of it.
