The distinction between TV shows and films has become less clear in recent times, but the main disparity lies in their duration. Movies span from 90 minutes to 3 hours, whereas a standard TV episode rarely extends beyond an hour, except on streaming platforms. Even though episodes are relatively brief compared to movies, TV series have the advantage of airing over extended periods without significant interruptions, thus unfolding numerous narratives and creating intricate characters throughout that span. However, a drawback of being on-air for such a long time is often forgetting or underutilizing important characters, which isn’t typically an issue films face.
Managing numerous storylines and characters in a single series often requires difficult decisions. Forgotten dreams, abandoned subplots, and sudden shifts in the familiar narrative become common occurrences. On occasion, a show may not have the luxury of clarifying why a significant character has disappeared from the scene.
1) Ben Geller (Friends)
In the initial phases of the TV series ‘Friends’, the character Ross Geller experiences challenges as a single parent following his divorce from Carol Willick. Over time, he manages to step up and care for his son, Ben (played by Cole Sprouse in later episodes), going on numerous trips together. However, towards the end of the show, Ben is less prominent as Ross navigates his romantic relationships, particularly with Rachel Green.
2) Cathy Simms (The Office)
In order to maintain intrigue following Michael Scott’s departure, the character Cathy Simms (played by Lindsey Broad) is introduced as a temporary replacement for Pam Halpert during her maternity leave on “The Office.” During a business trip to Florida, Cathy begins flirting with Jim Halpert, making his discomfort evident. However, her scheme backfires, and she disappears from the show after the Florida trip.
3) Robin Sylvester (Glee)
In the TV show “Glee”, character Sue Sylvester often creates problems for Will Schuester’s Glee Club. However, in Season 4, Sue makes an attempt to change her ways. She gives birth to a child named Robin, but the identity of the baby’s father remains unknown initially. Things seem to be going well with Robin, but she is not seen again after Season 4. Occasionally, Sue mentions Robin, but never appears to take care of her on-screen.
4) Santiago Herrera (Friday Night Lights)
In the show Friday Night Lights, Coach Eric Taylor welcomes anyone eager to learn under his guidance. In Season 2, Santiago Herrera (Benjamin Ciaramello) becomes part of Taylor’s team upon Buddy Garrity’s suggestion. Moved by the boy’s circumstances, Garrity even invites him to reside in his household; however, he struggles to monitor Santiago properly because the young man starts skipping school and practices.
5) Tina Pinciotti (That ’70s Show)
Characters like Tina Pinciotti (played by Amanda Fuller) from the sitcom “That ’70s Show” often play younger siblings, but she doesn’t receive as much attention as her character deserves. In one episode, Tina shows interest in Fez, which seems unusual given their age difference. The show only mentions her again through a soap opera narrator on TV, asking about what happened to Tina.

6) Buzz Hickey (Community)
Chevy Chase’s departure from “Community” created a gap within the cast, which was subsequently filled by Jonathan Banks, known for his role in “Breaking Bad.” In season 5 of the comedy series, Banks portrayed Buzz Hickey, a Criminology professor who became entangled in the antics of the study group. However, Buzz was mysteriously absent from season 6, with the show hinting via an email that he might have met an untimely end.
7) Josh Wolowitz (The Big Bang Theory)
One of the more poignant aspects of Howard Wolowitz’s character on The Big Bang Theory revolves around his challenging relationship with his father. Despite his inability to move past the abandonment by his dad and his mother, things take a turn for the better when he encounters his half-brother, Josh (played by Matt Bennett). In a Season 8 episode, they establish a connection, but unfortunately, Josh does not make another appearance following their initial meeting.
8) Ted Grant (Arrow)
Laurel Lance, portrayed by Arrow’s character, is finding it hard to accept that her friends are constantly battling crime while she remains on the sidelines. In an attempt to join the action, she seeks guidance from Ted Grant, a former vigilante and boxing coach (played by J.R. Ramirez). Ted instructs Laurel in the art of vigilantism and even resurfaces as Wildcat to safeguard Star City. However, in a season 3 confrontation with the villain Brick, Ted takes a severe beating which ultimately leads him to disappear from the scene.
9) Mark Brendanawicz (Parks and Recreation)
Initially, the early episodes of “Parks and Recreation” are somewhat hazy in my memory, but one character who stands out is Mark Brendanawicz, played by Paul Schneider. He’s the city planner who captures Leslie Knope’s heart, yet he barely acknowledges her before entering into a relationship with her good friend, Ann Perkins. By the end of Season 2, they part ways, and it appears that Mark departs from Pawnee.
10) Nebula Lawrence (Boy Meets World)
In the first season of Boy Meets World, similar to how Donna on That ’70 Show has a sibling, Topanga Lawrence also has a sister named Nebula Lawrence (played by Krystee Clark). Nebula appears at the Matthews house to take her younger sister home, but she only makes a brief appearance. Later on in the show, Topanga is referred to as an only child, suggesting that Nebula was perhaps a friend of hers who pretended to be her sister for some unexplained reason.
